Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and romance is in the air. To celebrate, I thought I would create a unique Valentine’s Day card for you.

This card was based on Sketch #28 from my collection of 50 Card Making Sketches.

Click Here To Get Your 50 Card Making Sketches Now

The beauty of this card is that it is so simple to make and yet looks quite sophisticated. It can also be adapted to suit any colour palette and collection of patterns.

Materials Used: Black cardstock, white cardstock, scraps of red and white patterned papers, an ‘I Love You’ stamp and black ink.

The key to this card is in the background. Instead of using a single patterned paper, I created a mosaic from scraps of red and white papers I had left over from other projects. You can arrange them in any way you like, but I created five distinct strips for what I think is the best visual impact.

To further enhance the effect and make my card design more striking, I matted my mosaic with black cardstock before placing it against the white background of my card.

I then created my heart outline with black cardstock and positioned it on the right side of my card. I used at outline instead of a solid shape as I wanted my background to show through. I also think it adds a touch of class to my design.

Finally, I finished off my adding the ‘I Love You’ sentiment. I made mine with a stamp and black ink, but you can use whatever you like – stamps, stickers, rub-ons, etc.

I hope this card design has given you some ideas for making Valentine’s Day cards of your own. Don’t forget, this card was based on just one of 50 different ideas in my 50 Card Making Sketches book. It’s a great companion for all of you who love to make cards, no matter what level you are at.

Yesterday we celebrated my Dad’s birthday. We had a wonderful family day with yummy food (I made a salmon quiche) and good company. And, of course, for the occasion, I made my Dad a cute birthday card.

Birthday cards do not always have to feature birthday icons like candles or presents. You can also use characters or images that reflect the personality and interests of the recipient. On my birthday card, I used a cute ant image from our cute range of animal rub-ons.

Click Here To View Our Full Range Of Animal Rub-Ons

This card was very quick and easy to create…and is easily adapted to suit any colour scheme and style:

Materials Used: Cream cardstock, green background sticker from Karen Foster, ‘Celebrate’ sticker from American Traditional Designs and ant rub-on from Piggy Tales Flowers & Bugs Rub-Ons.

The background is a sticker from Karen Foster. However, it could easily be recreated in your own patterns and colours using a selection of patterned papers. All you need to do is tear down one side and then layer your papers to create a similar effect.

Similarly, you can create the sentiment however you wish. I have used a sticker with a clear backing. You could also stamp the image, use alphabet stickers or even mat a sticker with cardstock or patterned paper for a more unique look.

For the final touch, choose a character or image you (and your recipient) like and position it above your sentiment. This gives your card personality while focusing attention on your message.

And you’re done. It really is that easy. And, it’s a great way to make a card for a guy without have to resort to the stereotypical images like fishing, golf, bow ties and the like. All you need is a cute image like the ant I have used from our range of animal rub-ons

Click Here To View Our Full Range Of Animal Rub-Ons

I hope you find card idea useful and easy to adapt to your own card making projects. I’d love to hear what you think of my Birthday Card Idea. Please leave a comment in the comments box below.

Super puffy stickers from kawaii brands like Kamio are perfect for adding that extra special touch to your handmade cards. They are not only amazingly cute, they also give amazing dimension to your cards and really make them pop. Some of them are even decorated with rhinestones!

Click Here To View Our Full Range Of Super Puffy Kawaii Stickers

I was very excited to get crafting with these beautiful stickers so I made this cute birthday card:

Materials Used: Pink cardstock, scrapbooking papers by Provo Craft, light purple cardstock, light pink cardstock, pink glitter gel pen, ‘Happy Birthday’ stamp, purple ink and Kamio Super Puffy Animals & Sweets Kawaii stickers.

I chose a blue cat sticker as my centrepiece. He is carrying a plate of macaroons and features a heart-shaped rhinestone near his left ear. Does it get any cuter?

He is also extra puffy for that extra special touch. He’s about 5mm thick, giving great depth and dimension to my card.

With such a dominant embellishment, you do need to anchor him to your page. And by anchor, I don’t mean how you attach him – he’s an ordinary sticker you just stick down as normal. However, your card design needs to include other elements to support him so that he doesn’t look out of place.

It comes down to weight distribution. Thanks to gravity, we all expect heavy things to be at the bottom and for extra heavy things to have other elements to support them. Keep this in mind when creating your own cards.

In this card, I have a big, heavy embellishment. So, I have placed him in the bottom right corner of my card. This places the weight of my design at the bottom of my card – where you would expect it to be.

I have also added an extra element to support that weight – the light purple square behind my embellishment.

Balance is another important element of design that is closely tied with weight distribution. Think about a table with one leg in the centre to support it. A table is designed to take some weight being placed on it. However, if you keep putting weight on just one corner of the table, it will eventually fall over. If, instead, you distribute that weight around the table, it will remain sturdy and balanced.

The same principle applies with card design. If you have a heavy element in one corner, you need to add extra elements to give it balance.

In this card, my super puffy sticker is positioned towards the top right corner of the purple square. To balance this out, I have placed my ‘Happy Birthday’ sentiment in the bottom left corner of the purple square. This distributes the weight of my design between the two opposing corners.

However, due to the dominant nature of my super puffy sticker, just doing this was not quite enough. So, I added two much smaller, less dominant stickers, one on either side of my large sticker. This did the trick … and made my card even cuter!

I hope this card idea has helped give you an insight into how I make cards and some of the important elements that make up a great card design. I’d love to hear what you think of my Kawaii Card Idea. Please leave a comment in the comments box below.

Now that Christmas is over, my attention turns to birthdays. We have quite a few family birthdays early in the year so I don’t have long to whip up some fun birthday cards. I know I could just buy some at the store, but it’s so much more rewarding to be able to create something personalised and specially tailored for the recipient.

For most of my birthday cards, I used birthday stickers as my embellishments. They give my cards personality without taking too much time.

Click Here To View Our Full Range Of Birthday Stickers

I thought I’d share with you what is sure to be the first of many birthday cards I make this year. I hope you like it:

To create this card, I used white cardstock and scraps of paper I had left over from previous projects. The background is a simple blue patterned paper – great for setting the scene on a birthday card for a guy. I have inked the edges with blue ink to give it character and depth.

I then added two over-lapping vertical rectangles on the left side of the card to create a background for my embellishment and to create a contrast with the background paper. Again, I inked the edges to give them definition.

I then added my ‘Happy Birthday’ message. I did this before adding my embellishment so I could work out the best placement for all the different pieces and ensure that I had plenty of space for my sentiment.

To create the sentiment, I used a range of stickers. The large white alphabet stickers are from Doodlebug. The blue ‘H’ is a Creative Imaginations alphabet sticker matted with white cardstock. The ‘Birthday’ sticker came on a sheet of birthday stickers but you could easily replace this with small alphabet stickers.

Finally, I added my cupcake sticker to complete my design. You could use any birthday-themed sticker as your embellishment. Or you could use a sticker depicting something the recipient of the card really loves (like a sport, destination, hobby etc). It’s up to you!

With Father’s Day approaching, consider using your scrapping expertise to make you Dad a unique Father’s Day card. Here we will show you how to make two special cards your Father and/or Grandfather will truly treasure.

Click Here To View Our Scrapbooking Cut-Outs

Both cards were made from the one sheet of Art of Scraps Hearts Cut-Outs. The first card also uses Scrap-Ease Marble Gold Paper, White Cardstock, a Red Brad, Red Ladder Ribbon, Foam Tape or Pop Dots, Alphabet Stamps and Brown Ink.

To begin, cut-out one large tag, one small tag, two squares and the title banner from your sheet of cut-outs. The large tag is your base. Wrap your ribbon around the tag, adhering it to the back to hold it in place. When adhering your tag to the marble background paper, centre it and angle it left to right.

I prefer to cut the background paper to size as the last step as I it allows me to position the elements where I want and then trim away any excess background. This, however, is a matter of personal preference.

You now want to attach your small tag. To do this, I glued it into the position I wanted. I lined up the little square at the top of the tag with the bottom corner of the yellow strip on the large tag. I then angled the tag in the opposite direction to the large tag to provide a sense of balance. When you are happy with your positioning, attach your brad. Make sure it is centred in the small square at the top of the small tag and passes through all the layers, including the background marble paper.

Next, take your title banner and use your alphabet stamps and ink to stamp a word in the centre of the banner. As I was making a Father’s Day card, I chose to keep it simple and write ‘Dad.’ Of course, you can adapt this to any theme you like. Once the ink is dry, adhere your title to your card. When positioning it across your tag and background, keep it parallel to the bottom edge of your card. This will help draw attention to it.

Now all that is left to do is to add an extra three-dimensional element to your card. To do this, use foam tape or pop dots to adhere one of your squares on top of the heart square on your large tag. Instead of placing it directly on top, move it slightly to the right and angle it so the edges are parallel with the edges of your card. Take your second square and cut out the heart from the middle. Again, use your foam tape or pop dots to adhere, but this time, place it on top of the heart on your small tag. It is your choice whether you place it directly on top of the heart or whether you angle it, as I have done, to create the appearance of two hearts.

Finally, trim your background paper to size (if you haven’t already) and adhere to the cover of a white card made from white cardstock. It is up to you whether or not you leave a white border around it or not. Either way, you have a great card for Dad, and you have enough of your cut-outs left to construct a second card like the one below.

This card uses the remainder of your Art of Scraps Hearts Cut-outs, Scrap-Ease Marble Gold Paper, White Cardstock, a Red Brad, Rust Flash Fibre, Foam Tape or Pop Dots, Alphabet Stamps and Brown Ink.

While this card is a variation on the previous design and uses much of the same principles and ideas, it is also unique in its own right and great to give to a father-in-law, grandfather or Pop (as in my case) this Father’s Day.

Again, begin by cutting out the elements you need – one large tag, one small tag and one square. Once again, the large tag is your base. Wrap your Rust Flash Fibre around the tag, adhering it to the back to hold it in place. When adhering your tag to the marble background paper, centre it and angle it left to right.

As before, the second step is to adhere your small tag to your card. This time however, place it so the centre of the square at the top of the small tag is directly above the centre of the top section of your large tag. Angle your tag out to the left, in the opposite direction to your large tag. I also tucked the bottom right-hand corner under the fibre wrapping the large tag.

Once the small tag is in place, attach your brad. Make sure it is centred in the small square at the top of the small tag and passes through all the layers, including the background marble paper.

This time, you do not have a title banner. Instead, use your alphabet stamps and ink to stamp a word across the yellow strip on your large tag. As I was making a Father’s Day card for my grandfather, I chose to keep it simple and write ‘Pop.’ Of course, you can adapt this to any theme you like. Make sure you give the ink enough time to dry.

To add a little more dimension to your card, once again, use foam tape or pop dots to adhere one of your squares on top of the heart square on your large tag. Instead of placing it directly on top, move it slightly to the right and angle it so the edges are parallel with the edges of your card.

Finally, trim your background paper to size (if you haven’t already) and adhere to the cover of a white card made from white cardstock. It is up to you whether or not you leave a white border around it or not.

There’s one thing I really love about winter – it’s a great time to catch up on some card making time. And that’s exactly what I did over this past long weekend. So today I thought I would share one of my latest creations with you. I used one of our popular family stickers as the centrepiece.

Click Here To View Our Range Of Family Stickers

Materials Used: Blue cardstock (three different shades), scraps of blue patterned paper, Chatterbox striped paper, circle stamps, blue ink and Sandylion Grandmas & Grandpas stickers.

To create this card, I used sketch #2 from my collection of 50 Card Making Sketches. For those of you with a copy already, please check page 21. If you haven’t got your copy yet, please visit:

http://50cardmakingsketches.com

The card sketch called for a square background. I could have just used a single square piece, but I decided to have a bit more fun.

To Create This Background:

1. Cut out 16 squares from scraps of blue patterned paper. Each square should be 1 inch by 1 inch.

2. Arrange your squares to form a 5 inch by 5 inch square frame.

3. Using stamps of your choice (I have used circles) and blue ink, randomly stamp images on your squares.

4. When dry, ink the edges of each 1 inch square with blue ink.

5. Finally, arrange your squares to form a 5 inch by 5 inch square frame in the centre of your card and glue down.

Now that you have a unique background, you can create the centrepiece of your card.

To Create Your Centrepiece:

1. Cut a 3 inch by 3 inch square from light blue cardstock. Mat with dark blue cardstock and glue in the centre of your card.

2. Cut a strip of striped paper approximately 2.5cm wide and 18.5cm tall. Use some decorative edged scissors to create a pattern down the right side. I have used a heartbeat pattern, but you can use whatever you like.

3. Ink the edges of your strip with blue ink and when dry, glue down the left side of your blue square, as shown above.

4. Embellish the rest of your card. I have used a Grandpa and grandson sticker from Sandylion Grandmas & Grandpas stickers.

This is just one idea for using sketch #2. I’d love to know what you create!

Christmas is sneaking up on us so it’s time to start thinking about some Christmas card making ideas! Handmade Christmas cards really are the perfect way to show your loved ones how much you care by making something special just for them.

If you’re like me though, the problem is your list of cards to send is quite long and make card after card can not only be time consuming but a little draining on your creative juices.

That’s why, every year I turn to my card making sketches. They just make the whole process so much easier so it becomes a lot more fun and a lot less like a chore!

If you’re not familiar with how card making sketches work, I’ll show you:

This is a sketch from 50 Card Making Sketches:

I used this card making sketch to create this Christmas card:

Supplies Used: Green cardstock, white cardstock, red cardstock, Bo Bunny Christmas papers and Heartwarming Christmas stickers.

As you can see, my Christmas card follows the same basic design elements as the card making sketch. They both have a matted rectangle as the background, a strip down the left side and a circle as the main feature.

The sketch showed me exactly what to do so I didn’t sit there umming and ahhing over everything, but I could still express my creativity by choosing my own colours, patterns and stickers. I have even added an extra rectangle so I had a place for my sentiment.

Card sketches are so easy to use and give you a starting point for your design. You don’t have to waste time staring at blank cardstock wondering what to do. Instead you can power through that long list of Christmas cards you want to make while having fun and being creative at the same time.

This is just one of the card making sketches featured in my 50 Card Making Sketches book at:

http://50cardmakingsketches.com

If you are stuck for Christmas card making ideas this Christmas, make sure you get your copy of my Card Making Sketches. You’ll surprised at how easy making Christmas cards this year will be. And you are sure to create handmade Christmas cards your loved ones will adore and treasure.

K&Company stickers are in a class all of their own. They’re stylish, they’re sophisticated and they look fabulous on your scrapbooking pages and cards.
While browsing K&Company’s website, I came across this absolutely stunning card I just had to share with you.

Artist: Melanie Cantrell

The first thing I noticed about this card was the rich colour scheme. It simply draws you in with its deep purples, greens and a touch of white.

The design also really plays with dimension by layering one element on top of another. The white heart is tucked behind the green floral paper and then the beautiful K&Company floral sticker is placed on top to give the card depth. The sticker is also three dimensional and embellished with a rhinestone to really make it stand out.

This card has been made for someone’s graduation, but it could easily be adapted to suit any theme or event. You’d simply have to change the words and the date.

What a great way to make someone feel special. I wonder who the lucky recipient of this beautiful card was!

How adorable are our new House Mouse stickers! They are just so cute! I couldn’t resist playing them so I thought I would share one of my creations with you. This card is very easy to make and is perfect for any romantic occasion like Valentines Day, an anniversary or even the birthday of someone special.

Click Here To View Our Range Of House Mouse Stickers

Materials Used: Brown cardstock, Bo Bunny Olivia Honeydew paper, Bo Bunny Olivia Mums paper (the underside), light brown cardstock, light brown ink, brown ink, a brown pen, a small heart punch and House Mouse Leaves and Berries Mice stickers.

To recreate this adorable card making idea using House Mouse stickers, follow these steps:

1. Cut a piece of brown cardstock measuring 15cm by 22cm. Fold in half to create a card. Place in front of you with the fold along the top.

2. Cut a piece of Bo Bunny Olivia Honeydew paper measuring 13.7cm by 10.3cm. Ink the edges with light brown ink. When dry, glue in the centre of your card.

3. Cut a piece from the underside of Bo Bunny Olivia Mums paper measuring 10cm by 8.8cm. Ink the edges with light brown ink. Ink again with brown ink (make sure it is a much darker shade than the first ink). When dry, use a brown pen to draw a dashed border around your piece.

Finally, make two small tears (one on the left side, one on the right) and fold down the flaps, as shown above. Then glue in the centre of your card.

4. Stick your chosen House Mouse sticker on light brown cardstock. Cut out around the edges of the sticker. The sticker itself as a clear background, so you have now given it a light brown background. Glue in the centre of your card.

5. To finish off, use your small heart punch to punch four hearts from the underside of your Bo Bunny Olivia Honeydew paper. If you wish, use your brown pen to draw an outline around the edge of each heart (this just helps them stand out a little more). Glue two on the left side of your card and two on the right side, as shown in the card making idea above.

And you’ve finished your super cute House Mouse card!

And their realistic appearance makes them extra special. So I decided to feature one of my favourites (the Gardenias sticker) on my latest card. I hope you like it!

2. Cut a piece of Foofala brown paper measuring 12.6cm by 12.6cm. Ink the edges with brown ink. When dry, mat with green cardstock. Ink the edges of the green cardstock with pink ink and when dry, glue to the centre of your card.

4. Cut a piece of It Takes Two Pink Fibre paper measuring 7.2cm by 11cm. Tear along the bottom edge, as shown in the card idea above. Ink the edges with brown ink and when dry, glue in the centre of your card.

5. Cut a piece of Scrapbooking Memories Pink and Brown paper measuring 7.2cm by 1.6cm. Ink the edges with brown ink. When dry, glue across your pink fibre paper approximately 1.9cm from the top edge.

6. Place your Gardenia sticker so that it is centred on top of your pink and brown paper from step #5.

7. Cut out two leaf shapes from Basic Grey paper (or any paper of your choosing). Arrange them one on top of the other towards the bottom right corner of your pink fibre paper, as shown in the card idea above. When you are happy with their placement, glue them down.

8. Using brown ink, stamp a ‘happy birthday’ message on a piece of brown cardstock. When dry, cut down to size and then ink the edges with brown ink. Again, when dry, glue to your card, as shown above.

And you’re done! You now have a beautiful and unique birthday card to give someone special on their next birthday. And as you can see, the Paper House sticker makes a gorgeous central feature of your design.
