Materials Used: Me & My Big Ideas paper, green cardstock, cream cardstock, scalloped edged scissors, Beary Patch Denim Alphabet stickers and Sandylion Grandmas & Grandpas stickers.

To recreate this scrapbooking idea using scrapbooking stickers, follow these steps:

1. Use the Me & My Big Ideas paper as your background.

2. Cut a piece of green cardstock measuring approximately 18cm by 15cm. Glue it towards the top right corner of your page approximately 2.7cm from the right edge and 3.8cm from the top edge.

3. Mat a horizontal 4×6 photo with cream cardstock. Glue on top of your green cardstock from the previous step. Make sure you leave a gap of about 3.5cm between the bottom of your photo and the bottom edge of the green cardstock.

4. Mat a grandparents sticker from your sheet of Grandmas & Grandpas stickers with cream cardstock and glue towards the bottom right corner of your green cardstock, as shown above. It will overlap the bottom right corner of your photo.

5. Select a collection of small stickers like flowers, cupcakes and hearts. Arrange them in a line along the bottom edge of your green cardstock to create a nice accent for your photo.

6. Place a hummingbird sticker in the top left corner of your green cardstock.

7. Cut a strip of green cardstock approximately 4cm tall. Mat with cream cardstock. For a more interesting effect, use decorative edged scissors to create a scalloped edge along the bottom of your mat. When done, glue across your page approximately 2cm from the bottom edge.

8. Mat a grandparents sticker from your sheet of Grandmas & Grandpas stickers with cream cardstock and glue in the bottom left corner of your page on top of your strip of green cardstock.

9. Use Beary Patch Denim Alphabet stickers (or any other blue alphabet stickers) to write your title across your strip of green cardstock.

10. Finally, embellish your title with any remaining small stickers like flowers and a humming bird.
And there you have it! A layout you can whip up quickly and easily to ensure the special people in your lives appear in your albums.

In this layout, I have use the brand new Karen Foster Kitchen Cooking stickers to create a “In the Kitchen” layout.

Materials Used: Three shades of brown Bazzill cardstock, Provo Craft Green Flowers paper, Deja Views Tangerine Flower Fresh Print paper, Foofala Brown Ivy paper, white cardstock, light brown cardstock, white Bazzill cardstock, two shades of brown ink, a brown pen, two white brads, orange ribbon from Bo Bunny and Karen Foster Kitchen Cooking stickers.

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the darkest shade of brown Bazzill cardstock as your background.

2. Cut a piece of Provo Craft Green Flowers paper measuring 27.3cm by 22cm. Ink the left and right edges with brown ink. Lightly ink again with dark brown ink. When dry, glue to your page so that it is centred and up against the right edge of your page.

3. Cut a piece of Deja Views Tangerine Flower Fresh Print paper measuring 27.3cm by 4cm. Round the top left corner. Ink the edges with brown ink. Lightly ink again with dark brown ink. When dry, glue to across your page so that it is approximately 2cm from the top edge and up against the right edge. It will slightly overlap your green paper.

4. Cut a second piece of Deja Views Tangerine Flower Fresh Print paper measuring 27.3cm by 4cm. Round the bottom left corner. Ink the edges with brown ink. Lightly ink again with dark brown ink. When dry, glue to across your page so that it is approximately 2cm from the bottom edge and up against the right edge. It will slightly overlap your green paper.

You have now created your background.

5. Mat a vertical 4×6 photo with white cardstock. Mat again with light brown cardstock and again with you middle shade of brown Bazzill cardstock. Glue to your page within the green section and approximately 1.2cm from the right edge.

It is now time to create your tags.

6. Cut two pieces of Foofala Brown Ivy paper, each measuring 5.5cm by 9cm. Cut the top corners of both to create a tag shape. Ink the edges of both with brown ink. Lightly ink again with dark brown ink. Then, using a brown pen, draw a border around each tag.

7. Mat both tags with your lightest shade of brown Bazzill cardstock and lightly ink the edges of both with your darkest shade of brown ink.

8. Cut two piece of orange ribbon, each about 9cm long. Wrap one around the first tag so that it starts towards the bottom left corner and finishes about one third the way up the right side.

9. Wrap one piece of ribbon around the first tag so that it starts towards the bottom left corner and finishes about one third the way up the right side. Please refer to the picture above for exact placement.

10. Wrap the second piece of ribbon around the second tag so that it starts towards the top left corner and finishes about one third the way down the right side. Please refer to the picture above for exact placement.

11. Cut out a flower shape from white cardstock. You may wish to use a template or punch to do this. Ink the edges with brown ink. Lightly ink again with dark brown ink and place the ‘A pinch a smidgen or a dash?’ sticker in the middle.

You now have the elements you need to create the collage to the right of the photo – two tags, a flower shape and your Kitchen cooking stickers.

12. Arrange your stickers and tags as shown in the layout above. You may want to place around with your arrangement before you stick anything down. You also have room to add journaling on the ‘From our kitchen with love” sticker.

13. One everything has been stuck down, cut two more piece of orange ribbon, each approximately 5cm long. Fold them in half and secure them at the top of each tag with a white brad, as shown above.

14. Finally, place the ‘In the Kitchen” cooking sticker towards the bottom right corner of your page, as shown above, for your title.

And there you have it! A cheerful  and fun layout for showcasing your fun in the kitchen photos!

When creating your heritage scrapbook, there are some things you should consider:

1. How much of your family tree (and your partner’s family tree) do you actually know? Write it out. Don’t forget to include dates and places of births, deaths and marriages. If there are gaps in your knowledge, ask other family members for help or consult family history websites.

2. How much to you know about your family members, both of this generation and previous generations? How many photos and other things of interest do you have? Collect everything together and organise them. If you feel you do not have enough, ask other family members if they have anything they could contribute.

Archival Quality

Before we go any further it is vital to stress the importance of only using archival materials in your heritage scrapbook.

Many old photos have already succumbed to aging and have probably come into contact with materials containing acid and lignin. I highly recommend you have copies made of all your heritage photos and use these in your albums. You will be able to protect them, plus you won’t have to worry about cutting up the originals. If you do decide to use originals, use photo corners in case you need to remove them later.

Keep in mind that newspaper clippings, magazine ads, certificates and other memorabilia are not photo safe. If you wish to include them in your scrapbook too, either use copies, spray them with archival mist or use memorabilia pockets to keep them and your photos safe.

The Size Of Your Album

You will also have to decide how big and extensive you wish your heritage scrapbooking album to be. A small album may include just your immediate family or one generation. This is perfect for short projects and mini albums.

Alternatively you could create an enormous album featuring everything you have and everything you know about everyone. Keep in mind that this is quite an undertaking. Do you really have time for this? Perhaps there is someone who can help you.

Most likely, you will choose somewhere in between.

Themes

Now that you have decided the size of the heritage scrapbooking project you wish to take on, it’s time to go about choosing the photos and the memorabilia you would like to include. One way to do this is to choose a theme.

Possible themes include:

 Births and Baptisms
 21st Birthday Parties
 Family Members in Sport / Art / Dance or any other activity
 Family Members in Military Service
 Occupations – How did everyone earn a living?
 Weddings
 Holidays
 Famous Family Members
 Deaths, Grave Stones and Eulogies
 School Days
 Family Reunions
 Family Traditions
 Family Pets

Another way to organise your scrapbook is by time. For example, you could focus on your family in the 1950s or the 19th century.

Title Pages

Your title page sets the scene for the rest of your album. It could include your family tree with a heading and if space permits, either an indication of what part of the family tree is featured in the album or a statement of the theme.

Also, make sure you include your own name on the title page (Eg Compile/Created by…) and the date. After all, you are an important part of your family’s heritage too.

Journaling

Journaling is an important part of heritage scrapbooking. It is important to record who is featured in the photos so future decorations have a record. Also include their relationship to you. For example, “Aunt Mary, Mum’s eldest sister.”

Where possible, try to not only identify the person in the photo, but also include something about them. For example:

 Pop was a practical joker.
 Pop loved gardening.
 Nana said it was love at first sight when she and Pop met.
 Aunt Mary loved animals and had 13 cats and 6 dogs.
 When I knew him, Fred has a 1932 Ford pick-up truck.
 Grandma made the best cakes in the world.
 Aunty Phyllis had a cabinet full of tennis trophies.

Colours

You may decide your colours with each new page or you might decide to use a consistent colour scheme throughout your album.

Heritage colours are usually browns, greens, an occasional deep red and an occasional deep blue, but it’s up to you which colours you want to use. You may like to include soft pinks or blues and browns on baby heritage pages.

To keep in sync with the heritage feel of your album, try having your old photos re-printed in sepia for that old-time feel.

Heritage Scrapbooking Ideas

There are many scrapbooking techniques that work well with heritage layouts. Collages can be particularly effective for creating that vintage feel, as seen in the layout below.

Materials Used: Marah Johnson Canvas Wash paper for the background, brown Paper Garden cardstock for the photo mats, scraps of Hot of the Press Lace paper and KI Sand Linen paper and Karen Foster Heritage stickers.

Other techniques include:

1. Distressing your papers by scratching the surface with a nail file or sand paper

2. Age your papers by smudging brown or black inks around the edges or across the surface.

3. Scrunching up your papers and then flattening them again to give an old, used effect.

4. Creating your own backgrounds by scanning some of your memorabilia. Fabrics, old letters and postcards work particularly well for this.

It is important to choose the correct stickers for your family layouts. Of course, the most vital factor is that you love the stickers you have chosen. Never work with a product that you don’t absolutely love! It takes away all the fun of scrapbooking and leads to disappointment with your creations.

There are two main types of family stickers to choose from:

1. Specific Titles And Quotes

Family stickers are perfect for defining and recording the exact relationships between members of your family. For example, if you are scrapping a photo of your Dad, you may choose stickers that specifically say ‘Dad’ or ‘Father’ as I have done in this layout:

Materials Used: Dark brown textured cardstock (for the background), Provo Craft Circles paper, Doodlebug Designs Blue Stripe paper, white cardstock, dark blue cardstock, two light blue brads and Autumn Leaves Love & Laughter stickers.

This layout could then either feature a photo of my Dad or a photo of my Dad and me together.

How often have you looked at old photos and wondered who on earth the people in them are and why they are important to your family’s memories?

By using specific family title or quote stickers like this you can quickly and easily record the relationship the people in the photo either have to you or to each other. And then when you and your family look back on them in years to come, it’s easy to see who everyone is.

Scrapbooking companies like Flair and Reminisce have realised the importance of recording this information and have released a large variety of stickers covering all sorts of family relationships including mother, father, brothers, sisters, daughter, son, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and more.

2. Sentiment Stickers

While it is important to record who the people in your photos are, after a while it can become a bit repetitious and boring. For example, if you are working on a whole album about your immediate family (say you, your partner and your children) you do not need to identify everyone and their relationships to you and each other on every single page.

Instead, you may prefer to record specific memories about the event featured or you may like to reflect on what that person (or people) really mean to you.

This is where family stickers featuring sentiments can be a real blessing. They allow you to express your feelings without getting caught up in the terrible struggle of trying to figure out the right things to say. We’ve all had writer’s block before and we all know it’s just not fun.

And it’s also easily avoided! For example, in this layout, I have used a sticker that reads ‘Love & Laughter’ and another that reads ‘Cherish’ to convey my feelings:

Materials Used: Karen Foster Plum Glaze paper (for the background), cranberry cardstock, K&Company Green & Yellow Striped paper, Creative Imaginations Unit 22 paper, green Bazzill cardstock, cream cardstock and Autumn Leaves Love & Laughter stickers.

The ‘Love & Laughter’ sticker reflects how I feel about the events taking place. It’s perfect for any photo/s of loved ones who are smiling and enjoying themselves and it captures the emotions of the moment.

The ‘Cherish’ sticker, on the other hand, conveys what the person (or people) in the photo mean to me. It focuses not on who they are but on my feelings about that person (or people). And, of course, there is nothing stopping me from writing their name somewhere else on the page if I still wish to record it.

So instead of sitting down and tearing your hair out over what to say, you can capture your most important memories and emotions with simple-to-apply sentiment stickers.

Both types of family stickers have an important role to play in your scrapbooking albums. Before deciding which stickers to use, think carefully about what information you actually want to record. And most of all, choose designs you love!

Mum has now taken her second step on her scrapbooking journey and I wanted to share it with you too (call it Proud-Daughter Syndrome!). So here it is…

She created this scrapbooking layout using Basic Grey Jackson Oh Baby Boy paper, Pebbles Inc Winter Circles/Stripe paper, dark blue cardstock, white cardstock, a black pen, blue alphabet stickers and Piggy Tales Flowers & Bugs Rub-Ons.

Mum saw our new Piggy Tales Flowers & Bugs Rub-Ons and thought they would be perfect for a garden layout. This layout shows my grandfather at one of the things he did best – tending to his garden.

Mum had never used rub-ons before, but thought she’d give them a go. She soon realised how simple they are to use and I love what she has done with them. I thought the way she used the circles in the background paper to emphasise some of the rub-ons (like the ant in the bottom left corner) was very clever and the ladybug footprints across the bottom of one of the photos is so cute!

This is the first page she created. The photos are of her elder sister, Jessica’s 12th birthday. She used Chatterbox Powder Puffs paper, white cardstock, red crate paper and Bo Bunny Barn Red Linen Alphabet Tags stickers.

This is the second page she created. It features her grandfather and two younger brothers. I’m not sure what the papers are (they came from her own stash) but she used dark blue Bazzill cardstock, orange Bazzill cardstock, blue thread, a blue pen. a selection of alphabet stickers and star stickers from Pebbles Inc My Guy Words stickers.

Ashleigh used sketches from my 500 Scrapbooking Sketches book to complete both pages. The sketches made it so easy for her to create these pages – she just had to find one she liked and get started. There was no umming and ahhing, just lots of fun. It turned out to be the perfect resource for scrapbooking with teenagers.
