Yesterday we celebrated my Dad’s birthday. We had a wonderful family day with yummy food (I made a salmon quiche) and good company. And, of course, for the occasion, I made my Dad a cute birthday card.

Birthday cards do not always have to feature birthday icons like candles or presents. You can also use characters or images that reflect the personality and interests of the recipient. On my birthday card, I used a cute ant image from our cute range of animal rub-ons.

Click Here To View Our Full Range Of Animal Rub-Ons

This card was very quick and easy to create…and is easily adapted to suit any colour scheme and style:

Materials Used: Cream cardstock, green background sticker from Karen Foster, ‘Celebrate’ sticker from American Traditional Designs and ant rub-on from Piggy Tales Flowers & Bugs Rub-Ons.

The background is a sticker from Karen Foster. However, it could easily be recreated in your own patterns and colours using a selection of patterned papers. All you need to do is tear down one side and then layer your papers to create a similar effect.

Similarly, you can create the sentiment however you wish. I have used a sticker with a clear backing. You could also stamp the image, use alphabet stickers or even mat a sticker with cardstock or patterned paper for a more unique look.

For the final touch, choose a character or image you (and your recipient) like and position it above your sentiment. This gives your card personality while focusing attention on your message.

And you’re done. It really is that easy. And, it’s a great way to make a card for a guy without have to resort to the stereotypical images like fishing, golf, bow ties and the like. All you need is a cute image like the ant I have used from our range of animal rub-ons

Click Here To View Our Full Range Of Animal Rub-Ons

I hope you find card idea useful and easy to adapt to your own card making projects. I’d love to hear what you think of my Birthday Card Idea. Please leave a comment in the comments box below.

Super puffy stickers from kawaii brands like Kamio are perfect for adding that extra special touch to your handmade cards. They are not only amazingly cute, they also give amazing dimension to your cards and really make them pop. Some of them are even decorated with rhinestones!

Click Here To View Our Full Range Of Super Puffy Kawaii Stickers

I was very excited to get crafting with these beautiful stickers so I made this cute birthday card:

Materials Used: Pink cardstock, scrapbooking papers by Provo Craft, light purple cardstock, light pink cardstock, pink glitter gel pen, ‘Happy Birthday’ stamp, purple ink and Kamio Super Puffy Animals & Sweets Kawaii stickers.

I chose a blue cat sticker as my centrepiece. He is carrying a plate of macaroons and features a heart-shaped rhinestone near his left ear. Does it get any cuter?

He is also extra puffy for that extra special touch. He’s about 5mm thick, giving great depth and dimension to my card.

With such a dominant embellishment, you do need to anchor him to your page. And by anchor, I don’t mean how you attach him – he’s an ordinary sticker you just stick down as normal. However, your card design needs to include other elements to support him so that he doesn’t look out of place.

It comes down to weight distribution. Thanks to gravity, we all expect heavy things to be at the bottom and for extra heavy things to have other elements to support them. Keep this in mind when creating your own cards.

In this card, I have a big, heavy embellishment. So, I have placed him in the bottom right corner of my card. This places the weight of my design at the bottom of my card – where you would expect it to be.

I have also added an extra element to support that weight – the light purple square behind my embellishment.

Balance is another important element of design that is closely tied with weight distribution. Think about a table with one leg in the centre to support it. A table is designed to take some weight being placed on it. However, if you keep putting weight on just one corner of the table, it will eventually fall over. If, instead, you distribute that weight around the table, it will remain sturdy and balanced.

The same principle applies with card design. If you have a heavy element in one corner, you need to add extra elements to give it balance.

In this card, my super puffy sticker is positioned towards the top right corner of the purple square. To balance this out, I have placed my ‘Happy Birthday’ sentiment in the bottom left corner of the purple square. This distributes the weight of my design between the two opposing corners.

However, due to the dominant nature of my super puffy sticker, just doing this was not quite enough. So, I added two much smaller, less dominant stickers, one on either side of my large sticker. This did the trick … and made my card even cuter!

I hope this card idea has helped give you an insight into how I make cards and some of the important elements that make up a great card design. I’d love to hear what you think of my Kawaii Card Idea. Please leave a comment in the comments box below.

Now that Christmas is over, my attention turns to birthdays. We have quite a few family birthdays early in the year so I don’t have long to whip up some fun birthday cards. I know I could just buy some at the store, but it’s so much more rewarding to be able to create something personalised and specially tailored for the recipient.

For most of my birthday cards, I used birthday stickers as my embellishments. They give my cards personality without taking too much time.

Click Here To View Our Full Range Of Birthday Stickers

I thought I’d share with you what is sure to be the first of many birthday cards I make this year. I hope you like it:

To create this card, I used white cardstock and scraps of paper I had left over from previous projects. The background is a simple blue patterned paper – great for setting the scene on a birthday card for a guy. I have inked the edges with blue ink to give it character and depth.

I then added two over-lapping vertical rectangles on the left side of the card to create a background for my embellishment and to create a contrast with the background paper. Again, I inked the edges to give them definition.

I then added my ‘Happy Birthday’ message. I did this before adding my embellishment so I could work out the best placement for all the different pieces and ensure that I had plenty of space for my sentiment.

To create the sentiment, I used a range of stickers. The large white alphabet stickers are from Doodlebug. The blue ‘H’ is a Creative Imaginations alphabet sticker matted with white cardstock. The ‘Birthday’ sticker came on a sheet of birthday stickers but you could easily replace this with small alphabet stickers.

Finally, I added my cupcake sticker to complete my design. You could use any birthday-themed sticker as your embellishment. Or you could use a sticker depicting something the recipient of the card really loves (like a sport, destination, hobby etc). It’s up to you!

Last week I introduced you to the adorable Japanese bear, Rilakkuma, so today I thought I would share a cute card I made using some of our new Rilakkuma stickers. I hope you like it!

Click Here To View Our Full Range Of San-X Rilakkuma Stickers

Rilakumma is known as a relaxed, somewhat lazy, bear. The name Rilakkuma is actually a combination of the Japanese word for relax and the Japanese word for bear. He is often seen lying around and enjoying some time off. I thought I might try to follow on with this theme in my card design:

Materials Used: Brown cardstock (two shades), scraps of scrapbooking papers, brown ink, a brown pen and San-X Shiny Rilakkuma Fruit Kawaii stickers.

I choose a sticker of Rilakkuma leaning back against an apple as my centrepiece. I placed it in the centre of a pink circle which I then matted on a brown flower-shaped cut-out. To further highlight my centrepiece, I inked the edges of both the circle and flower with brown ink and drew a dashed border with a brown pen.

I then created a colourful background using pieces of scrapbooking papers left over from other projects.

First, I covered the top half of my card with a leaf-patterned paper and covered the join between it and the brown cardstock background with a strip of dark brown paper. I then placed a row of four strips of patterned papers on the left side of my card to create a backdrop for my Rilakkuma centrepiece.

Finally, I added a row of mini Rilakkuma and fruit stickers across the bottom of my card. If you wish, you could also add a sentiment like ‘Happy Birthday’ in the bottom right corner, just above the stickers.

Our new range of Paper House stickers are the perfect sized embellishment for creating beautiful and one-of-a-kind handmade cards for your friends and family. And their realistic appearance makes them extra special. So I decided to feature one of my favourites (the Gardenias sticker) on my latest card. I hope you like it!

Click Here To View Our Range Of Paper House Stickers

Materials Used: Cream cardstock, green cardstock, Foofala brown patterned paper, Patchwork Cocoa Plaid paper, It Takes Two Pink Fibre paper, Scrapbooking Memories Pink and Brown paper, Basic Grey paper (for the leaves), brown cardstock, brown ink, pink ink, a ‘Happy Birthday’ stamp and Paper House Gardenias stickers.

To recreate this card making idea, follow these steps:

1. Cut a piece of cream cardstock measuring 14cm by 28cm. Fold in half to create a card. Place in front of you with the fold down the left side.

2. Cut a piece of Foofala brown paper measuring 12.6cm by 12.6cm. Ink the edges with brown ink. When dry, mat with green cardstock. Ink the edges of the green cardstock with pink ink and when dry, glue to the centre of your card.

3. Cut a piece of Patchwork Cocoa Plaid paper measuring 10cm by 14cm. Ink the edges with brown ink. When dry, glue down the centre of your card, as shown above.

4. Cut a piece of It Takes Two Pink Fibre paper measuring 7.2cm by 11cm. Tear along the bottom edge, as shown in the card idea above. Ink the edges with brown ink and when dry, glue in the centre of your card.

5. Cut a piece of Scrapbooking Memories Pink and Brown paper measuring 7.2cm by 1.6cm. Ink the edges with brown ink. When dry, glue across your pink fibre paper approximately 1.9cm from the top edge.

6. Place your Gardenia sticker so that it is centred on top of your pink and brown paper from step #5.

7. Cut out two leaf shapes from Basic Grey paper (or any paper of your choosing). Arrange them one on top of the other towards the bottom right corner of your pink fibre paper, as shown in the card idea above. When you are happy with their placement, glue them down.

8. Using brown ink, stamp a ‘happy birthday’ message on a piece of brown cardstock. When dry, cut down to size and then ink the edges with brown ink. Again, when dry, glue to your card, as shown above.

And you’re done! You now have a beautiful and unique birthday card to give someone special on their next birthday. And as you can see, the Paper House sticker makes a gorgeous central feature of your design.

Apart from the one paper, I only allowed myself to use cardstock, stamps and pens – nothing else. Here’s what I came up with!

Card Idea 1:

This card was created using DCWV Pink Butterflies Paper, blue Bazzill cardstock, white cardstock, light purple cardstock, dark purple cardstock, a Chinese text stamp, a Happy Birthday stamp, purple ink and a purple pen.

To recreate this card making idea, follow these steps:

1. Cut a piece of blue cardstock measuring 5 1/2 inches by 11 inches (14cm by 28cm). Fold in half to create a card.

2. Cut a piece of DCWV Pink Butterflies paper measuring 12.7cm by 11.5cm. Mat with white cardstock and glue to the front of your card approximately 0.4cm from the left and bottom edges.

3. Cut out a circle from light purple cardstock. It should be about 6cm from diameter. Using purple ink stamp Chinese text images (or any other pattern) on your circle to create a subtle background. When dry, draw a border of dots around the edge with a purple pen. Mat with white cardstock and glue to your card. It should be centred horizontally and towards the top of your card.

4. Cut out another circle, this time from white cardstock. It should be about 3.7cm in diameter. Draw a border around the edge (don’t worry about making it too neat). Glue to the centre of your circle from the previous step.

5. Cut out two blue butterflies from DCWV Pink Butterflies paper, making sure you leave a small pink border all the way around them. Glue in your circle, as shown above.

6. Cut out another two blue butterflies from DCWV Pink Butterflies paper. Make sure they are the same size as the butterflies from the previous step, but this time, do not leave a pink border around them. Also, cut off their antennae. Make a small fold along either side of the body to make the wings stick up. Glue one on top of each butterfly from the previous step but make sure you only place glue on the underside of the body section – you want to be able to make the wings stand up!

7. Cut a strip of dark purple cardstock measuring approximately 8.3cm by 1.5cm. Stamp a Happy Birthday message in the centre (you may like to go over this with a pen to make it stand out more). Mat with white cardstock and glue across the bottom of your circle, as shown above.

This card was created using DCWV Pink Butterflies Paper, white Bazzill cardstock, blue Bazzill cardstock, purple Bazzill cardstock, green Bazzill cardstock, a Happy Birthday stamp and purple ink.

To recreate this card making idea, follow these steps:

1. Cut a piece of white Bazzill cardstock measuring 15cm by 20.6cm. Fold in half to create a card. Place in front of you so the fold is down the left side.

2. Cut a piece of blue Bazzill cardstock measuring 7.5cm by 12.5cm. Glue vertically down the right side of your card, as shown above.

3. Cut a piece of purple Bazzill cardstock measuring 1.8cm by 14cm. Glue vertically down the right side of your card, approximately 0.6cm from the right edge.

4. Cut a piece of green Bazzill cardstock measuring 9.3cm by 4cm. Trim one end to create a tag. Glue horizontally across your card so that it is up against the right edge and 2.8cm from the bottom edge.

5. Cut out a floral design from DCWV Pink Butterflies paper, making sure you leave a pink border all the way around. Glue down the left side of your card, as shown above.

6. Stamp a Happy Birthday message in the bottom right corner of your green tag.

Card Idea 3:

This card was created using DCWV Pink Butterflies Paper, pink Bazzill cardstock, white cardstock, a Happy Birthday stamp, purple ink, a pink pen and a purple pen.

To recreate this card making idea, follow these steps:

1. Cut a piece of pink Bazzill cardstock measuring 15cm by 20.6cm. Fold in half to create a card. Place in front of you so the fold is along the top.

2. Cut a piece of DCWV Pink Butterflies paper measuring 14cm by 9.5cm. Tear along each edge to give a white torn look. Glue to the centre of your card.

3. Cut a piece of pink Bazzill cardstock measuring 9.8cm by 7cm. Using a purple pen, draw a border around the edge, as shown above.

4. Stamp a Happy Birthday message in the middle of your pink rectangle from the previous step. It doesn’t have to be perfectly centred, but you may like to go over the image with a pink and/or purple pen to make it stand out more.

5. Cut out a selection of swirls from DCWV Pink Butterflies paper, making sure you leave a pink border all the way around each one. Glue around your Happy Birthday image, as shown above. Trim away any excess overhanging the edges.

6. Mat your pink rectangle with white cardstock and glue to the centre of your card.

7. Cut out two butterflies from DCWV Pink Butterflies paper, again making sure you leave a small pink border all the way around them. Make a small fold along either side of the body to make the wings stick up. Glue one on either side of your birthday message, as shown above, making sure you only place glue on the underside of the body section of each butterfly (again, so you can make the wings stand up).
