Scrapbooking Brads

Scrapbooking brads make an appearance on many of my layouts – mostly when I need to hold a flower or ribbon in place. But sometimes, an extra special range of brads comes along that are so special that they deserve to be an embellishment in their own right.

That’s what happened when I saw our latest range of brads from Doodlebug Designs, especially the Bon Bon brads. I just couldn’t wait to get scrapping with them! The flower brads are just gorgeous! They have a glittery brown and white centre and a silver rim. Very sophisticated and perfect for my latest vacation layout!

Materials Used: Imagination Project Time Of My Life paper, Magenta brown paper, red paper (brand unknown), light brown cardstock, All My Memories epoxy circle stickers, PSX Dragonflies stickers, Crystal Magic, Creative Imaginations Alphabet Stamps stickers, Making Memories Scrabble Tile Alphabet stickers, brown ribbon, brown ink, white and green flowers (brand unknown), two dark brown brads and Doodlebug Designs Bon Bon Brads.

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the Imagination Project Time Of My Life paper as your background.

2. Cut a piece of Magenta brown paper measuring 26.5cm by 17.5cm. Ink the edges with brown ink and when dry, glue towards the bottom right corner of your page approximately 1.5cm from the right edge and 1.5cm from the bottom edge.

3. Cut a piece of red paper measuring 21cm by 22.5cm. Glue to your page approximately 2.8cm from the right edge and 4.4cm from the bottom edge.

4. Mat a horizontal 5×7 photo with light brown cardstock. Glue to your page towards the top of your red paper from the previous step (please see scrapbooking layout above for positioning).

5. Cut a piece of brown ribbon 21cm long. Glue across your red paper approximately 1.6cm above the bottom edge of the red paper, as shown above. Don’t worry what the ends look like. They will be covered over later.

6. Select two dragonfly stickers, one slightly larger than the other. Mat both of them with light brown cardstock. If you like, paint each with Crystal Magic for a more dimensional effect.

When dry, glue one dragonfly towards the bottom left corner of your red paper (as shown above) so that it covers the end of your ribbon. Glue the other towards the top right corner of your Magenta brown paper so that it overlaps your photo a little. It will probably go over the edge of you page, so make sure you trim away the excess.

You are now going to create the arrangement of flowers in the bottom right corner of your page

7. Select a large green flower and a medium white flower. Attach them with a brown brad towards the bottom right corner of your red paper and overlapping your ribbon.

8. Select a medium white flower and a small green flower. Attach them with a light brown polka dot brad from Doodlebug Bon Bon Brads above and to the left of the first flower.

9. Select a small green flower and a mini white flower. Attach them with a small brown brad above and to the right of the second flower

10. Now add two flower brads from Doodlebug Bon Bon Brads to your flower arrangement for that extra special touch. If you are not sure where to place them, please look at the layout above.

11. Using alphabet stickers, write your title in the space remaining below your photo.

12. Finally, place two or three epoxy circles in the centre of some of the flowers still showing from your background paper. It just gives your scrapbooking layout that extra little lift.

And you’re done! Another special layout for your scrapbooking album. As you can see, the brads I have used here really lift the design of the page up by adding extra dimension and texture plus a touch of sophistication.

Heart Scrapbooking Ideas

Often when we go looking for fresh scrapbooking ideas, what we find is often difficult and time consuming to re-create. But sometimes, the real beauty in a layout lies in its simplicity!

For example, the scrapbooking layout below involves little more than matting your photo and scattering some small squares of patterned paper around your page. But in using these squares to create a heart-shaped frame around your photo, you can create a gorgeous page to preserve a special photo.

Materials Used: Pixie Press Rose Splash paper, Creative Imaginations Lavender Wash paper, Me & My Big Ideas Green Stripe paper, purple cardstock, green ink, All My Memories Alphabet stickers and Queen & Company Purple Heart Brads.

To recreate this heart scrapbooking idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the Rose Splash paper as your background. Lightly ink around the edges with green ink. The effect is subtle, but it does help to bring out the green in the paper’s design. Set aside to dry.

2. Mat a 4×6 horizontal photo with purple cardstock. The border around your photo should be quite small (around 2mm).

3. Mat your photo again with Rose Splash paper. This border should be much wider (around 10mm). Ink the edges with green ink.

4. When dry, once again mat your photo with purple cardstock. This border should also be narrow (around 2mm).

5. Place your matted photo on your background paper to decide its position, but do not adhere yet. If you wish, you can lightly mark where it will go with a pencil.

6. Cut out (or punch) a collection of 2cm squares from both your Creative Imaginations Lavender Wash paper and your Me & My Big Ideas Green Stripe paper. You will need 35-40 squares in total.

7. Ink the edges of your green squares with green ink and set aside to dry.

8. And now comes the creation of your heart scrapbooking idea! Arrange your squares in a heart shape around where your photo will go, as shown in the layout above. Make sure you use and variety of angles and keep in mind that you do not have to alternate your squares evenly all the way around your heart. In other words, it does not have to go purple, green, purple, green, purple, green etc. Doubling up on one or the other colours every now and then helps to add interest to your page.

9. Once you have completed you heart, adhere your photo in place.

10. Use your alphabet stickers to write your title towards the bottom right corner of your scrapbooking layout. Remember, keeping it small and understated draws the viewer’s attention to your photo and the heart frame you have created around it.

11. Finally, finish off your page with a simple heart accent like a Purple Queen & Company Heart Brad in the bottom right corner of your page, next to your title.

The beauty of this heart background scrapbooking idea is that it really doesn’t matter what scrapbooking supplies you have. You can adapt it to suit any papers you like!

3D Flower Stickers

I love using flower stickers to dress up my scrapbooking layouts. They always look fabulous and they come in so many designs, colours and patterns that there is always something to suit any project.

But there is one thing that is even better – 3D flower stickers! They not only look fabulous but they also give your scrapbook that extra special touch by adding dimension and texture to your design.

In this layout, I have used 3D flower stickers from Stickopotamus to embellish my page.

This stickers are not only three-dimensional, but they feature a touch of glitter for that little bit of sparkle.

Materials Used: Imagination Project In The Corner paper, It Takes Two Pink Fibre paper, Scrapbooking Memories Pink and Brown Striped paper, Imagination Project Spaghetti Arms paper, brown cardstock, light brown cardstock, brown and white striped ribbon, brown ink, alphabet stamps and Stickopotamus 3D Cherry Blossoms stickers.

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the Imagination Project In The Corner paper as your background.

2. Cut a piece of It Takes Two Pink Fibre paper measuring approximately 24cm by 26. Tear down the left edge, as shown above. The top of your paper should now be about 14cm wide at the top and 23.5cm wide at the bottom. Ink around the edges with brown ink. When dry, glue down the right side of your page approximately 2cm from the right edge.

3. Cut a strip of Scrapbooking Memories Pink and Brown Striped paper approximately 4.5cm wide. Mat with brown cardstock and glue down your page approximately 4cm from the right edge.

4. Cut a piece of brown and white striped ribbon and glue across your page approximately 4.5cm from the bottom edge.

5. Select your main photo and mat it with light brown cardstock. Mat it again with Imagination Project Spaghetti Arms paper and glue in the top left corner of your page approximately 1.5cm from the left edge and 3.5cm from the top edge.

6. Select your second photo and mat it with light brown cardstock. Glue in the bottom right corner of your page approximately 3cm from the right edge and 3.5cm from the bottom edge.

7. Place the first of your 3D flower stickers across the top left corner of your page, as shown above.

8. Using alphabet stickers or stamps (I have used alphabet stamps stamped on light brown cardstock) to create your title underneath your 3D flower stickers from the previous step. If you have space left, add another 3D flower sticker to embellish your title.

9. Place another 3D flower sticker in the bottom right corner of your page to mirror the sticker you have already placed at the top of the page.

10. Finally, add a final 3D flower sticker in the bottom left corner of your main photo.

3D flower stickers are a quick and simple way to add dimension and texture to your page. You don’t have to worry about trying to layer small and intricate pieces yourself…it’s all done for you.

And, of course 3D stickers are just limited to flowers. There are plenty of other themes and designs to choose from too.

This week I wanted to scrap a photo from my 26th birthday, but instead of choosing a traditional birthday design, I thought I might create something more whimsical and feminine. The Springs Birds & Flower stickers from Karen Foster are so pretty and were just perfect. Here are the results:

Materials Used: Dark purple cardstock (for the background), Metallic blue Bazzill cardstock, American Traditional Glitter paper, Fiskars Purple Stars paper, It Takes Two Leaves paper, purple border stickers from Hunter Leisure, Making Memories Alphabet stickers, a purple pen and Karen Foster Springs Birds & Flower stickers.

There are a few stages involved when re-creating this layout but it is quite simple. Once again, I have used a sketch from 500 Scrapbooking Sketches to guide my design (although I turned it upside down).

Here are some tips to note when re-creating a layout like this.

1. Printing photos in black and white or sepia are a great way to give character to your photos. They also allow you to scrap with whatever colours, patterns and embellishments you want, without having to worry if they will clash with the clothes the subjects of your photos are wearing. In this case, it allowed me to scrap a photo that was heavily dominated by greens and blues with purples and pinks (and of course, my pretty Karen Foster stickers).

2. I cut around the patterns on my American Traditional Glitter paper to create unique corners for my layout. It not only made my page unique, but turning the paper into embellishments gave me the opportunity to highlight the beautiful swirls and flowers on my paper instead of covering them up with photos.

3. I used a purple pen to draw a dashed border around both my purple stars paper and my leaf paper. This gave the designs some distinction so they didn’t get lost in the design. It’s a wonderful, but subtle way to make things stand out without making them the centre of attention.

4. Just because border stickers tend to be 12 inches long, that doesn’t mean you have to use all 12 inches of them. In this layout, I have only used sections of my border stickers to create nice accents at the top and bottom of my page.

5. One of my favourite things to do with stickers is to stick them on white cardstock and cut them out. I don’t always do it, but I find that it’s nice to help some stickers stand out from the page.

Most Karen Foster stickers are made from cardstock so they already have some depth, but their clear range is made to resemble rub-ons and so have very little depth. I love the new line. They really do look like they could be rub-ons – no ridges when crossing layers, no outlines…just beautiful. But on this page, I wanted the pink bird in the middle of the page to stand out, so I stuck it on white cardstock and then cut it out before gluing it in place.

There is a Karen Foster sticker to suit almost every scrapbooking project. They come in lots of different themes and styles. Find the ones that make you smile!

Butterfly stickers are probably my all time favourite type of stickers. My albums are literally full of them. I just can’t help it! They are so pretty! And there are so many designs and styles to choose from!

Stickopotamus (Sticko for short) stickers from EK Success are amongst the best. They offer a wide variety of flat, glitter, vellum, shiny and metallic butterfly stickers to choose from. They come in pretty pinks, pastel purples, bright oranges and all sorts of other fun colour combinations so there is something for everyone.

Butterfly stickers can be used on a wide variety of scrapbooking projects including feminine layouts, layouts of flowers and the beauty of the great outdoors, off-the-page items like photo frames or tins and so much more.

In this layout, I have used glittery pink butterfly stickers from Sticko to compliment my pink flower photo:

Materials Used: Pink cardstock, Scrapbooking Australia Strawberry Candy paper, Provo Craft Pink Stripes paper, burgundy cardstock, white cardstock, pink ink, a brown pen, pink ribbon, Around the Block Black Alphabet stickers and Stickopotamus stickers.

This layout was surprisingly easy to create. I used a sketch from 500 Scrapbooking Sketches to guide my design.

Here are some tips to note when re-creating a layout like this.

1. The background paper was not a true 12×12 paper (don’t you hate that!) so I matted it on pink cardstock. It gave the layout a nice pink border as well as made my page 12×12.

2. To create the border around the pink stripes paper, I first used a brown pen to lightly draw a handful of horizontal and vertical lines in the top right and left corners. I then used a pink ink pad to brush ink all around the top and side edges. I used a criss-cross pattern for added interest.

3. Two of the butterfly stickers were matted with white cardstock to help them stand out from the background.

4. The alphabet stickers were not placed in a straight line. This was to make them more interesting, but also to help them fit.

5. There are several torn edges on this page. When tearing paper, always tear slowly and towards you for more control.

Butterfly stickers add a beautiful touch to your scrapbooking layouts. Give them a go. You might be surprised at just how gorgeous your pages turn out!

I like to think of flowers as a scrapbooking staple. They come in many different formats including paper blossoms, chipboard, rub-ons, felt, metal, fabric and of course, stickers. I love all types, but flower stickers are a personal favourite of mine because you can use them almost anywhere and they are so easy to attach. Plus, you don’t have to worry about them being too heavy or bulky for your layouts.

Flower stickers are typically used on feminine layouts, like the layout below:

Materials Used: Gin-X She Wears Pink Candy Machine paper (for the background), Rhonna Farrer paper, Sandylion Light Blue Floral paper, American Traditional Light Pink Wash paper, pink cardstock, white cardstock, brown ink and Bo Bunny Alissa Alphabet & Flowers stickers.

In this layout, the flower stickers are used to create a beautiful girly page that’s still sophisticated and stylish. And it was surprisingly easy to make!

Weddings, bridesmaids and flower girls are the perfect subject for layouts using flower stickers. Other themes you might like to consider include:

Mothers/Grandmothers
Nieces, Aunts and any other female family members
Friends
Girls Night In
Girls Night Out
Shopping
A Day at the Spa

Of course, your flower stickers don’t have to be strictly reserved for feminine layouts.

First Scrapbooking Layout

This week has been very special for me. My Mum decided to take up scrapbooking and made her first ever scrapbooking layout. I am so proud of her page and couldn’t wait to share it with you.

She used our new line of Basic Grey Wisteria papers.

She created this scrapbooking layout using Basic Grey Wist Garden Paper Pack, white cardstock, a flower punch, purple ribbon and Making Memories Purple Alphabet stickers.

The photo is of me standing on our balcony (and yes, my Mum does call me Jenny – not Jen! Lol!).

Now you might be thinking that I helped Mum a lot with this page, but I really didn’t. The design is all hers. The only things I did were to suggest she include some ribbon somewhere and I helped her cut out a couple of flowers (after she had decided what she wanted to use).

My favourite element of the page is the frame she has made around the photo. I love how she has used a very busy and colourful paper to draw your attention to the photo without overwhelming you.

I also love how she has cut out a wide variety of shapes from her Basic Grey papers to create unique embellishments for her layout. This is a technique I often use, but I would not have thought to cut out the crest shape in the upper left corner or the butterfly shapes she has used in the bottom left corner of her photo.

I am so excited that my Mum has taken up scrapbooking and I am extremely proud of her first efforts. Please help me encourage her to continue scrapping by leaving a comment below. It really would make her day!

Flower Stickers

Flower stickers are fabulous for creating spectacular scrapbooking layouts with ease. Often the most effective layouts are the most simple but it takes that extra little something to add an edge of sophistication. And that’s where your flower stickers come in. They are easy to arrange and apply and give your scrapbook layout a sense of style.

In this layout, I have used flower stickers from Magenta, but any floral stickers can be used to create the came effect.

This layout was created using green patterned paper (brand unknown), Creative Imaginations Hydrangea Wash paper, Creative Imaginations Yellow Squiggle paper, tan cardstock and Magenta Joyful Flowers stickers.

The key to this layout is the colour combinations. The bright green background was a bit much in itself, but was softened by the two squares of purple paper in opposite corners.

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the green patterned paper as your background.

2. Cut out two squares of Creative Imaginations Hydrangea Wash paper measuring a little less than 6” by 6”. Glue one in the top right corner of your scrapbooking page and the other in the bottom left corner. Make sure you leave a small green border around the edges of each.

3. Mat a vertical 4×6 photo with tan cardstock. Mat again with Creative Imaginations Yellow Squiggle paper, making sure the squiggle paper is significantly longer than the cardstock, as shown above. This adds interest and helps balance the symmetry of the page.

4. Finally, place your flower stickers all around the page. If any of your flower stickers have stems, try to place them towards the bottom of the page to make them look more grounded.

While this is a quick, simple way to dress up a page it is quite effective. Flower stickers add joy to your pages and can be a lot of fun. Don’t be afraid to play with unusual colour combinations either. They add interest to your albums as well as providing an endless stream of possibilities to play with.

Another Vellum Scrapbooking Idea

Vellum scrapbooking is so much fun. Vellum is a gorgeous medium which can be applied to many different scrapbooking projects to give them a unique look. This layout showcases the effectiveness of layering vellum.

I created this page to show off the roses my husband gave me on our 18 month anniversary. I wanted the page to follow a romantic theme while drawing attention to the redness of the roses. Hence, I chose a burgundy theme.

This layout was created using red plaid paper, Francheville red hearts paper, iridescent vellum, Hot of the Press white hearts vellum, white cardstock, a black pen and Suzy’s Zoo Ollie & Martha Valentines stickers.

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the red plaid paper as your background.

2. Cut a piece of Francheville red hearts paper measuring approximately 21cm by 28cm. Tear along each side to give a white edge. Glue vertically to your page approximately 4.5cm from the left edge and 1.5cm from the bottom edge.

3. Tear a strip of iridescent vellum approximately 8cm tall. Glue it across your page approximately 6cm from the top edge.

NOTE: Scrapbooking with vellum can be a difficult task. I often use a spray adhesive, but it can be messy, so I avoid it where possible. For this strip, spray adhesive was not necessary. Because I was placing my photo on top of the vellum, I simply placed the adhesive in the areas that would be covered up by the photo. I also placed adhesive in the area that I was later going to cover with a scrapbooking sticker. This way, the vellum was still glued down firmly, but I did not have to worry about messy adhesives or the adhesive being visible.

4. Tear a rectangle of Hot of the Press white hearts vellum measuring approximately 18cm by 21cm. Glue to your page approximately 2cm from the left edge and 1cm from the top edge. Again, you only need to use adhesive in the areas that will later be covered by your photo, so you don’t have to worry about your glue being visible.

5. Mat your photo with white cardstock. Glue to your page approximately 6.5cm from the left edge and 4.8cm from the top edge.

6. Use a black pen to journal on the white heart vellum below your photo. When you have finished your journaling, tear out a piece of white cardstock that is slightly bigger than the space your journaling takes and glue it underneath the vellum to make your journaling stand out.

7. Place the small rose sticker in the bottom left corner of the photo and a string of small heart stickers underneath.

8. Tear a rectangle of iridescent vellum measuring approximately 13cm by 9.5cm. Place your large Ollie & Martha sticker in the middle and three small heart stickers around it. Glue in the bottom right corner of your page. Again, you only need to place adhesive in the areas covered by your stickers.

9. Finally, place the large ‘Be Mine’ heart sticker on the vellum next to your photo, as shown above.

On Cloud 9

Cloud 9 designs are always fresh and sophisticated. That’s what makes them so much fun to work with. They also co-ordinate really well, so putting together a layout like this is really easy. The photos I have used are from a trip we took to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We spent a few days relaxing at Coffs Harbour and this is the resort we stayed at. The Cloud 9 designs suited my photos perfectly, but this scrapbooking idea can really be adapted to suit any photos. Have a go yourself and see what you come up with.

This layout was created using Cloud 9 Sorbet Blooms Paper Pack, Scenic Route Sentimental Dots paper, light brown cardstock, brown ink, a brown pen, Creative Imaginations Ocean Alphabet stickers and Cloud 9 Sorbet Villa Thoughts stickers.

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the blue stripes paper from the Cloud 9 Sorbet Blooms Paper Pack as your background.

2. Cut a piece of green paper from the Cloud 9 Sorbet Blooms Paper Pack measuring approximately 27.5cm by 24.5cm. Run the edge of your scissors along the edges to give a distressed white edge. Glue horizontally to your background approximately 1.5cm from the left edge and 3cm from the bottom edge.

3. Cut a square of Scenic Route Sentimental Dots paper measuring approximately 14cm by 14cm. Ink the edges with brown ink and when dry, glue to the centre of your page.

4. Mat two horizontal 4×6 photos (you may like to crop them a little) and one vertical 4×6 photo with light brown cardstock.

5. Glue your vertical photo in the bottom right corner of your page, approximately 2.5cm from the right edge and 4.2cm from the bottom edge.

6. Glue a horizontal photo next to your vertical photo so that the bottom edge is inline with the bottom edge of your vertical photo.

7. Glue your second horizontal photo above your first.

8. Cut a piece of light brown cardstock measuring approximately 10.7cm by 8.8cm. Ink the edges with brown ink and when dry, glue above your vertical photo. Add your journaling with a brown pen, but be careful – you will be covering significant areas of this piece with stickers later.

9. Place a tab sticker from Cloud 9 Sorbet Villa Thoughts stickers in the top right corner of your journaling piece, as shown above. Place another one near the top left corner of your top horizontal photo, as shown above.

10. Place the blue flower stickers at the top of your page in the centre, as shown above. Place the green stem sticker and leaf sticker below them. They will all overlap other elements on your page, so make sure you are not covering anything important.

11. Place the second green stem sticker down the right side of your vertical photo and the green flower sticker at the top of it. Add the leaf sticker and small orange sticker, as shown above.

12. Add a collection of small circular stickers around your journaling block for extra decoration.

13. Cut out an orange flower from the Green Flowers paper from the Cloud 9 Sorbet Blooms Paper Pack. Glue on the left side of your page, as shown above. Place a small green dot sticker at the centre of your flower. Then place the small blue flower sticker and another dot sticker below it, as shown above.

14. Cut out a pink flower and a white flower from the Green Flowers paper from the Cloud 9 Sorbet Blooms Paper Pack. Glue at the bottom of your page, as shown above. Place a brown dot sticker in the centre of each flower and a small green flower sticker next to them, as shown above.

15. Finally, using letters from Creative Imaginations Ocean Alphabet stickers, place your title in the top left corner of your page.
