Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and romance is in the air. To celebrate, I thought I would create a unique Valentine’s Day card for you.

This card was based on Sketch #28 from my collection of 50 Card Making Sketches.

Click Here To Get Your 50 Card Making Sketches Now

The beauty of this card is that it is so simple to make and yet looks quite sophisticated. It can also be adapted to suit any colour palette and collection of patterns.

Materials Used: Black cardstock, white cardstock, scraps of red and white patterned papers, an ‘I Love You’ stamp and black ink.

The key to this card is in the background. Instead of using a single patterned paper, I created a mosaic from scraps of red and white papers I had left over from other projects. You can arrange them in any way you like, but I created five distinct strips for what I think is the best visual impact.

To further enhance the effect and make my card design more striking, I matted my mosaic with black cardstock before placing it against the white background of my card.

I then created my heart outline with black cardstock and positioned it on the right side of my card. I used at outline instead of a solid shape as I wanted my background to show through. I also think it adds a touch of class to my design.

Finally, I finished off my adding the ‘I Love You’ sentiment. I made mine with a stamp and black ink, but you can use whatever you like – stamps, stickers, rub-ons, etc.

I hope this card design has given you some ideas for making Valentine’s Day cards of your own. Don’t forget, this card was based on just one of 50 different ideas in my 50 Card Making Sketches book. It’s a great companion for all of you who love to make cards, no matter what level you are at.

How adorable are our new House Mouse stickers! They are just so cute! I couldn’t resist playing them so I thought I would share one of my creations with you. This card is very easy to make and is perfect for any romantic occasion like Valentines Day, an anniversary or even the birthday of someone special.

Click Here To View Our Range Of House Mouse Stickers

Materials Used: Brown cardstock, Bo Bunny Olivia Honeydew paper, Bo Bunny Olivia Mums paper (the underside), light brown cardstock, light brown ink, brown ink, a brown pen, a small heart punch and House Mouse Leaves and Berries Mice stickers.

To recreate this adorable card making idea using House Mouse stickers, follow these steps:

1. Cut a piece of brown cardstock measuring 15cm by 22cm. Fold in half to create a card. Place in front of you with the fold along the top.

2. Cut a piece of Bo Bunny Olivia Honeydew paper measuring 13.7cm by 10.3cm. Ink the edges with light brown ink. When dry, glue in the centre of your card.

3. Cut a piece from the underside of Bo Bunny Olivia Mums paper measuring 10cm by 8.8cm. Ink the edges with light brown ink. Ink again with brown ink (make sure it is a much darker shade than the first ink). When dry, use a brown pen to draw a dashed border around your piece.

Finally, make two small tears (one on the left side, one on the right) and fold down the flaps, as shown above. Then glue in the centre of your card.

4. Stick your chosen House Mouse sticker on light brown cardstock. Cut out around the edges of the sticker. The sticker itself as a clear background, so you have now given it a light brown background. Glue in the centre of your card.

5. To finish off, use your small heart punch to punch four hearts from the underside of your Bo Bunny Olivia Honeydew paper. If you wish, use your brown pen to draw an outline around the edge of each heart (this just helps them stand out a little more). Glue two on the left side of your card and two on the right side, as shown in the card making idea above.

And you’ve finished your super cute House Mouse card!

I set myself a real scrapbooking challenge this week. As you’ve probably noticed, I love scrapping with patterned papers and combining different designs and patterns. But this week, I decided to restrict myself.

My challenge was to create a single-page layout using only ONE sheet of double-sided patterned paper, some cardstock and very minimal embellishing.

Click Here To View Our Range Of Scrapbooking Papers

Here’s what I came up with:

Materials Used: Dark brown textured cardstock, light brown cardstock, Cosmo Cricket Earth Love Recycle paper, brown ink, dark brown ink, black ink, Sandylion brown ribbon border sticker, alphabet stickers from Pink Paislee and Making Memories and a quote sticker from NRN Designs.

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the dark brown textured cardstock as your background.

2. Cut a square of light brown cardstock measuring approximately 28cm by 28cm. For extra effect, cut a scalloped edge pattern along the edges, as shown in the layout above. This just gives your page a little extra character.

Ink the edges of your square with brown ink and glue in the centre of your page.

3. Cut a strip from the underside of Cosmo Cricket Earth Love Recycle paper measuring 7.5cm by 30.5cm. Very lightly ink the edges with black ink. You just want to give it a subtle outline. Set aside to dry.

4. Cut a piece of Cosmo Cricket Earth Love Recycle paper measuring 25.7cm by 23cm. Ink the edges with dark brown ink and when dry, glue to your layout so that it is centred horizontally and is about 2.6cm from the bottom edge.

5. Glue your strip from step #3 across your page approximately 6.2cm from the bottom edge.

6. Place a Sandylion brown ribbon sticker (or any border sticker or piece of ribbon) across your page approximately 7.1cm from the bottom edge.

7. Mat a vertical 5×7 photo with light brown cardstock. Glue to your page approximately 3.9cm from the left edge and 4cm from the bottom edge.

8. Using alphabet stickers, write your title to the left of your photo, as shown in the scrapbooking layout above. My title reads: Together. The Best Place To Be.

9. From your remaining patterned paper, cut out two leaf images and two dandelion images. Arrange the leaves in the top left corner of your page and the two dandelion images in the bottom right corner of your page, as shown above.

10. Finally, add a quote sticker towards the top right corner of your page, just above your Recycle patterned paper.

I had a lot of fun with this challenge. Why don’t you give it a go and see what you can create with just a single piece of double-sided scrapbooking paper as the basis of your design!

Often when we go looking for fresh scrapbooking ideas, what we find is often difficult and time consuming to re-create. But sometimes, the real beauty in a layout lies in its simplicity!

For example, the scrapbooking layout below involves little more than matting your photo and scattering some small squares of patterned paper around your page. But in using these squares to create a heart-shaped frame around your photo, you can create a gorgeous page to preserve a special photo.

Click Here To View Our Full Range Of Scrapbooking Papers

Materials Used: Pixie Press Rose Splash paper, Creative Imaginations Lavender Wash paper, Me & My Big Ideas Green Stripe paper, purple cardstock, green ink, All My Memories Alphabet stickers and Queen & Company Purple Heart Brads.

To recreate this heart scrapbooking idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the Rose Splash paper as your background. Lightly ink around the edges with green ink. The effect is subtle, but it does help to bring out the green in the paper’s design. Set aside to dry.

2. Mat a 4×6 horizontal photo with purple cardstock. The border around your photo should be quite small (around 2mm).

3. Mat your photo again with Rose Splash paper. This border should be much wider (around 10mm). Ink the edges with green ink.

4. When dry, once again mat your photo with purple cardstock. This border should also be narrow (around 2mm).

5. Place your matted photo on your background paper to decide its position, but do not adhere yet. If you wish, you can lightly mark where it will go with a pencil.

6. Cut out (or punch) a collection of 2cm squares from both your Creative Imaginations Lavender Wash paper and your Me & My Big Ideas Green Stripe paper. You will need 35-40 squares in total.

7. Ink the edges of your green squares with green ink and set aside to dry.

8. And now comes the creation of your heart scrapbooking idea! Arrange your squares in a heart shape around where your photo will go, as shown in the layout above. Make sure you use and variety of angles and keep in mind that you do not have to alternate your squares evenly all the way around your heart. In other words, it does not have to go purple, green, purple, green, purple, green etc. Doubling up on one or the other colours every now and then helps to add interest to your page.

9. Once you have completed you heart, adhere your photo in place.

10. Use your alphabet stickers to write your title towards the bottom right corner of your scrapbooking layout. Remember, keeping it small and understated draws the viewer’s attention to your photo and the heart frame you have created around it.

11. Finally, finish off your page with a simple heart accent like a Purple Queen & Company Heart Brad in the bottom right corner of your page, next to your title.

The beauty of this heart background scrapbooking idea is that it really doesn’t matter what scrapbooking supplies you have. You can adapt it to suit any papers you like!

Today I wanted to share with you one of my free card making ideas that I sent to my Card Making Classroom subscribers. What is Card Making Classroom? It’s a free newsletter that I send every week through email featuring card making classes like this one. There is no charge and everyone is welcome. If you would like to join, please visit:

http://cardmakingclassroom.com/freeclasses/

This particular card making idea was sent for Valentine’s Day but would work very well for a number of different occasions like anniversaries.

Items Required:

Dark brown cardstock, Patchwork Dark Brown Argyle paper (or any dark brown patterned paper), light brown cardstock, Doodlebug Brown Dots paper (or any light brown patterned paper), Red cardstock (or patterned paper), a brown pen, dark brown ink, light brown ink, two brown brads, a Pebbles Inc Loving sticker (if you do not have this, simply cut out a square of cardstock and write ‘loving’ on it), a Pebbles Inc Forever sticker (if you do not have this, simply cut out a circle of cardstock and write ‘forever’ on it) and brown alphabet stickers to write ‘YOU’ (mine are from Sandylion).

Instructions:

To create this card:

1. Cut a piece of dark brown cardstock measuring 4 inches by 8 inches (10.2cm by 20.4cm). Fold in half to create a card.

2. Cut a piece of Patchwork Dark Brown Argyle paper (or any dark brown patterned paper) measuring 3 3/4 inches by 3 3/4 inches (9.5cm by 9.5cm). Using a dark brown ink, ink all the way around the edges. When dry, glue to the centre of your card.

3. Cut a piece of light brown cardstock measuring 2 3/8 inches by 2 5/8 inches (6cm by 6.6cm). Using light brown ink, ink all the way around the edges. Then, very lightly ink the edges again with dark brown ink. Make sure you can still see plenty of your light brown ink. When dry, use a brown pen to draw a dashed border all the way around the edges, as shown above. Glue to your card approximately 5/8 inches (1.6cm) from the left edge and 5/8 inches (1.6cm) from the bottom edge.

4. Cut out a heart shape from red cardstock or patterned paper. It should be about 2 1/4 inches (5.6cm) across and about 2 3/8 inches (6cm) tall. Using dark brown ink, ink all the way around the edges. When dry, glue towards the top right corner of your card. Make sure you place it at an angle and covering a significant amount of your light brown cardstock. As shown above, you will be creating a pocket-like effect. If you wish, don’t stick it down until you have the next piece ready and can see exactly where you should position it.

5. Cut a piece of light brown cardstock measuring 1 1/2 inches by 2 5/8 inches (3.8cm by 6.6cm). Tear at an angle down the right side. Using light brown ink, ink all the way around the edges. Then, very lightly ink all the edges except the torn edge again with dark brown ink. When dry, use a brown pen to draw a dashed border around all the edges except the torn edge.

6. Glue the piece from the previous step to the left side of your light brown cardstock from Step #3. Make sure all the edges are inline. You have now created a pocket and your red heart from Step #4 should look like it is tucked into the pocket.

7. Cut a strip of Doodlebug Brown Dots paper (or any light brown patterned paper) 2 5/8 inches (6.6cm) long. Keep the left edge straight but angle the right edge so that your strip is 3/8 inches (1cm) wide at the top and 5/8 inches (1.6cm) wide at the bottom. Using dark brown ink, ink the long edges. When dry, glue vertically to your light brown cardstock approximately 1/4 inches (0.6cm) from the left side of your light brown cardstock.

8. You have now finished the basic elements of your card and just need to decorate it. Place your Pebbles Inc Loving sticker towards the top of your heart, as shown above. Again, if you do not have a sticker like this, cut out a square measuring approximately 5/8 inches by 5/8 inches (1.6cm by 1.6cm) and write ‘loving’ towards the bottom of it.

9. Place a brad at the top of your ‘loving’ square from the previous step.

10. Using brown alphabet stickers, write the word ‘YOU’ across your heart, underneath your ‘loving’ square.

11. Place your Pebbles Inc Forever sticker towards the bottom right of your heart, as shown above. Again, if you do not have a sticker like this, cut out a circle approximately 3/4 inches (2cm) across and write ‘forever’ towards the bottom of it.

12. Place a brad at the top of your ‘forever’ square from the previous step.

13. Finally, cut out two more hearts from red cardstock or patterned paper. One should be about 1 1/4 inches (3.2cm) tall and the other about 1 inch (2.5cm) tall. Using dark brown ink, ink all the way around the edges. When dry, glue in the bottom left corner of your light brown cardstock, as shown above.

Doodlebug stickers are among my favourite types of stickers. They are always playful and fun, but sometimes they can also be adapted to suit more sophisticated and elegant layouts. On this layout I have used bright pink and red romance stickers from Doodlebug and combined them with muted tones and flourish rub-ons to create a more formal and stylish look.

This layout was created using brown Bazzil cardstock, pink patterned paper from Scrapbooking Memories magazine, pink cardstock, ribbon, Creative Imaginations Pink Alphabet stickers, Junkitz Alphabet Rub-ons, Basic Grey Flourishes Rub-ons, dark brown ink and Doodlebug Designs Sweet Things stickers.

Click Here To View Doodlebug Designs Sweet Things Stickers

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the brown Bazzil cardstock as your background.

2. Cut a piece of pink patterned paper measuring approximately 21cm by 27.5cm. Adhere vertically to the left side of your page, as shown in the layout above.

3. Mat a vertical 5×7 photo with pink cardstock. Adhere to your page approximately 3.5cm from the top edge and 3cm from the left edge.

4. Glue a piece of ribbon across the bottom of your page about 3.5cm above the bottom edge.

5. Select three heart-shaped stickers and two circular stickers from your Doodlebug Designs Sweet Things stickers. Adhere them along your ribbon equal distances apart, as shown in the layout above.

6. Place the letters of the word ‘Love’ from Doodlebug Designs Sweet Things stickers to the right of your photo.

7. Use Junkitz brown alphabet rub-ons to write the word ‘is’ to the right of the word ‘Love’ from the previous step.

8. Create the last word of your title with Creative Imaginations pink alphabet stickers. Mat each letter with white cardstock and ink the edges with dark brown ink to make them stand out. When dry, glue to your layout below the first two words of your title.

9. Adhere two pink heart stickers in the top left corner of your title area, as shown in the layout above.

10. Finally, finish off your page with Basic Grey Flourishes Rub-ons. I have placed a rub-on on the top and bottom left corners of the photo. I also placed a long rub-on below my title and embellished with a few extra swirls. Play with the combinations and see what you come up with!

Vellum scrapbooking is so much fun. Vellum is a gorgeous medium which can be applied to many different scrapbooking projects to give them a unique look. This layout showcases the effectiveness of layering vellum.

I created this page to show off the roses my husband gave me on our 18 month anniversary. I wanted the page to follow a romantic theme while drawing attention to the redness of the roses. Hence, I chose a burgundy theme.

This layout was created using red plaid paper, Francheville red hearts paper, iridescent vellum, Hot of the Press white hearts vellum, white cardstock, a black pen and Suzy’s Zoo Ollie & Martha Valentines stickers.

Click Here To View Suzy’s Zoo Ollie & Martha Valentines stickers

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the red plaid paper as your background.

2. Cut a piece of Francheville red hearts paper measuring approximately 21cm by 28cm. Tear along each side to give a white edge. Glue vertically to your page approximately 4.5cm from the left edge and 1.5cm from the bottom edge.

3. Tear a strip of iridescent vellum approximately 8cm tall. Glue it across your page approximately 6cm from the top edge.

NOTE: Scrapbooking with vellum can be a difficult task. I often use a spray adhesive, but it can be messy, so I avoid it where possible. For this strip, spray adhesive was not necessary. Because I was placing my photo on top of the vellum, I simply placed the adhesive in the areas that would be covered up by the photo. I also placed adhesive in the area that I was later going to cover with a scrapbooking sticker. This way, the vellum was still glued down firmly, but I did not have to worry about messy adhesives or the adhesive being visible.

4. Tear a rectangle of Hot of the Press white hearts vellum measuring approximately 18cm by 21cm. Glue to your page approximately 2cm from the left edge and 1cm from the top edge. Again, you only need to use adhesive in the areas that will later be covered by your photo, so you don’t have to worry about your glue being visible.

5. Mat your photo with white cardstock. Glue to your page approximately 6.5cm from the left edge and 4.8cm from the top edge.

6. Use a black pen to journal on the white heart vellum below your photo. When you have finished your journaling, tear out a piece of white cardstock that is slightly bigger than the space your journaling takes and glue it underneath the vellum to make your journaling stand out.

7. Place the small rose sticker in the bottom left corner of the photo and a string of small heart stickers underneath.

8. Tear a rectangle of iridescent vellum measuring approximately 13cm by 9.5cm. Place your large Ollie & Martha sticker in the middle and three small heart stickers around it. Glue in the bottom right corner of your page. Again, you only need to place adhesive in the areas covered by your stickers.

9. Finally, place the large ‘Be Mine’ heart sticker on the vellum next to your photo, as shown above.

This is just one use for scrapbooking vellum. Please explore our other articles for more ideas and applications for this fantastic medium.

It’s not often that I get to scrap with pink, so I loved creating this page. These tulips were a gift from James (my husband and co-owner of Stickers ‘N’ Fun) and I just thought they were so beautiful they needed to be scrapped. I chose a clean, simple design from my 500 Scrapbooking Sketches book to keep the focus on my photos. If you like it, please leave a comment for me in the comments box below.

This layout was created using purple Bazzill cardstock, Autumn Leaves Paper Ribbons paper, white cardstock, small purple alphabet stickers, Suzy’s Zoo Easter Joy stickers, Bo Bunny White Shabby Random Phrases stickers and Doodlebug Designs Love Spell stickers.

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the purple Bazzill cardstock as your background.

2. Cut a piece of Autumn Leaves Paper Ribbons paper measuring approximately 25.74cm by 23.2cm. Using a pencil, lightly mark the spot 10.5cm up from the bottom right corner and the spot 10.5cm left of the bottom right corner. Cut a straight line between these two points so you now have a triangle.

3. Glue your triangle in the bottom right corner of your page.

4. Glue your remaining piece of Paper Ribbons paper up against the left edge of your page and approximately 4.3cm from the bottom edge.

5. Use Bo Bunny White Shabby Random Phrases stickers to create a collage of words on a diagonal line between your two pieces of Paper Ribbons paper, as shown above. Keep in mind that a section of these words will be covered later with your photo.

6. Mat two vertical photos and one horizontal photo with white cardstock. Position them on your page as shown above and glue down.

7. Mat the ‘love’ sticker from Doodlebug Designs Love Spell stickers with white cardstock and glue in the top left corner of your page as part of your title. Finish off your title with small purple alphabet stickers. If you wish, you can add journaling around your page with these same alphabet stickers. For example, I have written ‘From James’ underneath the photo of the single tulip and the date in the space above my horizontal photo.

8. Add a small heart sticker from Doodlebug Designs Love Spell stickers to the right of your title and a heart outline sticker somewhere down the right side of your page.

9. Finally, place a sticker (in my case, a mouse with a tulip) in the bottom right corner of your page.

What do you think? Do you like this scrapbooking idea? Do you have any questions? Would you have done anything different? We’d love to hear from you! Please leave a comment below.

I love creating feel-good layouts with scrapbooking stickers as they are generally quite quick to complete, a lot of fun and still look good when I’ve finished. This page is no exception. The happy co-ordinating colours combined with the layering of different patterns and some stickers highlight the ‘sunshine’ theme of this page and just make me want to smile. I hope you like it too!

This layout was created using yellow Bazzill cardstock, Sandylion Light Blue Floral paper, Mustard Moon Green paper, American Crafts Girly Stripes paper, Provo Craft Blue Squares paper, yellow cardstock and Bo Bunny You Are My Sunshine stickers.

To recreate this scrapbook page idea, follow these steps:

1. Use the yellow Bazzill cardstock as your background.

2. Cut a square of Sandylion Light Blue Floral paper measuring approximately 24cm by 24cm. Adhere to the background up against the right edge and approximately 1.5cm from the top edge.

3. Cut out the green ribbon sticker from your sheet of Bo Bunny You Are My Sunshine stickers. Trim it so you have one piece approximately 20cm long and another approximately 7.5cm long. Set aside the small piece for later use. Stick the large piece vertically along the left edge of the Sandylion Light Blue Floral paper. Make sure the top edge of the paper and the sticker are aligned with each other, as shown in the layout above.

4. Cut a square of Mustard Moon Green paper measuring approximately 18.5cm by 18.5cm. Adhere to the background up against the right edge and approximately 4cm from the top edge.

5. Cut a piece of Provo Craft Blue Squares paper measuring approximately 27.5cm by 5cm. Cut the bottom edge in a curve shape, as shown in the layout above. To create the curve you can use a template or draw the line yourself as I did. Glue to your layout so that it is up against the right edge and the lowest point of your curve is approximately 0.6cm from the bottom edge.

6. Cut a strip of American Crafts Girly Stripes paper approximately 2cm tall. Turn it upside down to show the plain purple underside. Cut a scalloped edge along the bottom edge of this strip. You can draw one freehand, use a template or use a punch to create this effect. When done, glue horizontally to your layout approximately 3.5cm from the bottom edge. Your scalloped edge should be overlapping with your Blue Squares paper.

7. Cut a second strip of American Crafts Girly Stripes paper approximately 4.5cm tall. Glue to your page approximately 4.5cm from the bottom edge and overlapping the top edge of your scalloped strip.

8. Mat a 4×6 photo with yellow cardstock. Glue horizontally to your page approximately 1.2cm from the right edge and 6.7cm from the top edge.

9. Place the three button stickers towards the top right corner of the page, so that they overlap the Blue Floral paper and the Green paper.

10. Place the ‘You Are My Sunshine’ sticker towards the bottom left corner of the page approximately 0.8cm from the left edge and 6.2cm from the bottom edge.

11. Place the two circle stickers, one above the other along the vertical green ribbon sticker, as shown in the layout above.

12. Finally, place the small green ribbon piece that you set aside previously approximately 2.5cm below your photo and up against the right edge.

What do you think? Do you like this scrapbooking idea? Do you have any questions? Would you have done anything different? We’d love to hear from you! Please leave a comment below.
