Birthday Wishes Scrapbooking Idea

Birthday celebrations are often the source of very special memories and wonderful photos. And, they are a great subject for your scrapbooking layouts. Today’s layout shows you how to take a simple sheet of birthday stickers and create a beautiful page for your precious birthday memories.

To create this page, I used sketch #128 from my collection of 500 Scrapbooking Sketches. Please note that I have made this page to feature photos from a young girl’s birthday celebrations, but the colours could be easily changed to suit anyone.

Materials Used: Scrapbooking papers by Provo Craft, white cardstock, alphabet stickers from Doodlebug, Diecuts With A View and Mrs Grossmans and Sandylion Birthday Icons Borders stickers.

This birthday layout is very easy to create. Begin by making your backdrop. To do this, you will need two pieces of co-ordinating paper. Use one as the base for your page. Cut the other at an angle, like that shown above, and glue to the bottom of your page.

Use the yellow and orange border sticker to cover the join between your two papers. This gives your page some character and is far more interesting than a straight edge. Please keep in mind though, that because it is at an angle, it will not stretch the whole way across your page. As a result, you need to cut it in a place that will be eventually covered by one of your photos. This will enable you to leave a gap between the two pieces (behind one of your photos) so that it looks like it goes all the way across.

Now that you have your background, it’s on to the photo mats. These are very easy to make too. First, mat two vertical 4×6 photos with white cardstock. Mat again with pink paper, but this time, leave a gap at the bottom of the photo mat. This is so you can stick your streamer border sticker across the bottom of each photo mat to give a festive look to your page.

How you create your title is up to you. I used a selection of letter stickers of different sizes, fonts and colours. If they were white, I also matted them with pink paper so they wouldn’t get lost against the background. I also added two small birthday stickers to add interest to my title.

Finally, I arranged a small selection of birthday stickers in the bottom right corner of my page to add interest and give balance to my design. If you wish, you could also add some journaling here.

Oh, and for one last touch, I added a birthday balloon sticker between my two photos. And then it was done. In very little time, I had a fun and festive birthday scrapbooking page. And all it took was some fun papers, a scrapbooking sketch for guidance and some cute birthday stickers.

Day At The Beach Scrapbooking Idea

Now that the kids are back at school, it’s a great time to catch up on scrapbooking those wonderful summer memories. And since trips to the beach are almost an essential part of an Australian summer, I thought I would start with a fun beach scrapbooking idea.

For ideas, I turned to our amazing range of beach and summer scrapbooking stickers where you’ll find everything from sandcastles to shells, fish, seahorses and more.

The stickers I chose to use were the Doodlebug Day At The Beach stickers:

Materials Used: It Takes Two Orange fibre paper for the background, Paper Garden Baby Wide Lines paper, blue cardstock, yellow cardstock and Doodlebug Day at the Beach stickers.

I fell in love with the Doodlebug Day at the Beach stickers the moment I saw them. The colours are just gorgeous. But, I wasn’t too keen on the design of the border sticker. The arrangement of the different elements just didn’t sit right with me for some reason. So, rather than wasting it, I transformed it into a new border of my own design. Just because a sticker is made one way, it doesn’t mean you have to keep it that way!

To create my own border to go down the left side of the left page, I first cut out the tag elements from the border sticker and set them aside. I then tore a strip of blue paper and a strip of green paper (I used Paper Garden Baby Wide Lines Paper for this, but you could use any blue and green cardstock). I made sure both edges of each strip were torn as this gives the best effect. I then glued them down the left side of the left page and arranged the tag stickers on top.

Now I have a unique border that transformed something I didn’t like into something I love!

Creating the rest of this beach scrapbooking layout is easy!

I decided I didn’t want a second border on the right page, but I needed something to balance the border on the left page. So, I tore another smaller strip of blue paper and another strip of green paper (both were about 12cm long and torn along both long edges).

I placed the blue strip in the top right-hand corner of the right page, about 2cm from the top edge and right up against the side edge. I then positioned the three Sun, Sea and Sand stickers on top.

I placed the green strip in the bottom left-hand corner of the right page to mirror the blue strip. In other words, it is about 2cm from the bottom and up against the left edge of the page. I decorated this strip with the ‘Sea’ stickers.

The blue and green strips on the right side of the layout balance each other and together provide balance for the border on the left page of your layout. This helps create a visually pleasing effect overall.

But, the page is not finished yet! Next, the photos have to be matted and arranged on the layout. I placed two photos on each page, again to provide balance. I also placed a piece of blue cardstock horizontally behind my first photo. This was to enhance the photo and help it stand out from the others. It also creates a nice little area to add a bit of journaling.

Finally, I added my remaining beach stickers and voila! A bright beach scrapbooking layout to record some of your precious summer memories. And all it took was a cute sheet of beach stickers and a little bit of time!

Valentine’s Day Card Idea

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and romance is in the air. To celebrate, I thought I would create a unique Valentine’s Day card for you.

This card was based on Sketch #28 from my collection of 50 Card Making Sketches.

The beauty of this card is that it is so simple to make and yet looks quite sophisticated. It can also be adapted to suit any colour palette and collection of patterns.

Materials Used: Black cardstock, white cardstock, scraps of red and white patterned papers, an ‘I Love You’ stamp and black ink.

The key to this card is in the background. Instead of using a single patterned paper, I created a mosaic from scraps of red and white papers I had left over from other projects. You can arrange them in any way you like, but I created five distinct strips for what I think is the best visual impact.

To further enhance the effect and make my card design more striking, I matted my mosaic with black cardstock before placing it against the white background of my card.

I then created my heart outline with black cardstock and positioned it on the right side of my card. I used at outline instead of a solid shape as I wanted my background to show through. I also think it adds a touch of class to my design.

Finally, I finished off my adding the ‘I Love You’ sentiment. I made mine with a stamp and black ink, but you can use whatever you like – stamps, stickers, rub-ons, etc.

School Days Scrapbooking Idea

With the kids heading back to school this week, I thought I would make a fun, easy to create school-themed scrapbooking layout for you. It’s perfect for capturing your child’s school memories like their first day at school, their classroom activities or pictures of their favourite teacher.

To create this page, I used our School Borders stickers from Sandylion.

Materials Used: Orange cardstock, green plaid paper by Paper Garden, light orange cardstock, cream cardstock, a selection of alphabet stickers from Doodlebug Designs and Making Memories and Sandylion School Borders stickers.

To create a layout like this, first you need to set the scene by creating a backdrop for your photos. To do this, I cut a piece of green plaid paper approximately 22cm tall and glued it across the middle of my page. I then added my border stickers.

I placed the school supplies border stickers along the top edge of my green paper. Since the top of the border sticker is not a straight edge, it added interest and a sense of fun to my design.

I then placed the alphabet border sticker towards the bottom of my green paper to anchor my design.

Next came the photo blocks. I added a vertical photo block on the left side of the page. Because I wanted this photo to be the focus of my page, I double-matted it. I also added a second, smaller photo block on the right side of the page for a smaller photo. Alternatively, this could be used for journaling.

I also added small accents to the corners of my photo blocks – some crayon stickers in the bottom left corner of my main photo and some pencil stickers in the bottom right corner of my small photo. They add interest to your page and help the photos blend in with the rest of the design.

And now the fun part – the title. To create the title, I used a selection of different coloured and different sized alphabet stickers. I then used the accent stickers that came with my border stickers to highlight and decorate my title. As a result, I not only have a cute title, but one that reflects the theme of my page.
Our Sandylion School Borders were the inspiration for this page. I had a lot of fun scrapping with them. I hope you will too.

Cute Birthday Card Idea

Yesterday we celebrated my Dad’s birthday. We had a wonderful family day with yummy food (I made a salmon quiche) and good company. And, of course, for the occasion, I made my Dad a cute birthday card.

Birthday cards do not always have to feature birthday icons like candles or presents. You can also use characters or images that reflect the personality and interests of the recipient. On my birthday card, I used a cute ant image from our cute range of animal rub-ons.

This card was very quick and easy to create…and is easily adapted to suit any colour scheme and style:

Materials Used: Cream cardstock, green background sticker from Karen Foster, ‘Celebrate’ sticker from American Traditional Designs and ant rub-on from Piggy Tales Flowers & Bugs Rub-Ons.

The background is a sticker from Karen Foster. However, it could easily be recreated in your own patterns and colours using a selection of patterned papers. All you need to do is tear down one side and then layer your papers to create a similar effect.

Similarly, you can create the sentiment however you wish. I have used a sticker with a clear backing. You could also stamp the image, use alphabet stickers or even mat a sticker with cardstock or patterned paper for a more unique look.

For the final touch, choose a character or image you (and your recipient) like and position it above your sentiment. This gives your card personality while focusing attention on your message.

And you’re done. It really is that easy. And, it’s a great way to make a card for a guy without have to resort to the stereotypical images like fishing, golf, bow ties and the like. All you need is a cute image like the ant I have used from our range of animal rub-ons

Giving Balance To Your Card Ideas

Super puffy stickers from kawaii brands like Kamio are perfect for adding that extra special touch to your handmade cards. They are not only amazingly cute, they also give amazing dimension to your cards and really make them pop. Some of them are even decorated with rhinestones!

I was very excited to get crafting with these beautiful stickers so I made this cute birthday card:

Materials Used: Pink cardstock, scrapbooking papers by Provo Craft, light purple cardstock, light pink cardstock, pink glitter gel pen, ‘Happy Birthday’ stamp, purple ink and Kamio Super Puffy Animals & Sweets Kawaii stickers.

I chose a blue cat sticker as my centrepiece. He is carrying a plate of macaroons and features a heart-shaped rhinestone near his left ear. Does it get any cuter?

He is also extra puffy for that extra special touch. He’s about 5mm thick, giving great depth and dimension to my card.

With such a dominant embellishment, you do need to anchor him to your page. And by anchor, I don’t mean how you attach him – he’s an ordinary sticker you just stick down as normal. However, your card design needs to include other elements to support him so that he doesn’t look out of place.

It comes down to weight distribution. Thanks to gravity, we all expect heavy things to be at the bottom and for extra heavy things to have other elements to support them. Keep this in mind when creating your own cards.

In this card, I have a big, heavy embellishment. So, I have placed him in the bottom right corner of my card. This places the weight of my design at the bottom of my card – where you would expect it to be.

I have also added an extra element to support that weight – the light purple square behind my embellishment.

Balance is another important element of design that is closely tied with weight distribution. Think about a table with one leg in the centre to support it. A table is designed to take some weight being placed on it. However, if you keep putting weight on just one corner of the table, it will eventually fall over. If, instead, you distribute that weight around the table, it will remain sturdy and balanced.

The same principle applies with card design. If you have a heavy element in one corner, you need to add extra elements to give it balance.

In this card, my super puffy sticker is positioned towards the top right corner of the purple square. To balance this out, I have placed my ‘Happy Birthday’ sentiment in the bottom left corner of the purple square. This distributes the weight of my design between the two opposing corners.

However, due to the dominant nature of my super puffy sticker, just doing this was not quite enough. So, I added two much smaller, less dominant stickers, one on either side of my large sticker. This did the trick … and made my card even cuter!

Happy Birthday Card Idea

Now that Christmas is over, my attention turns to birthdays. We have quite a few family birthdays early in the year so I don’t have long to whip up some fun birthday cards. I know I could just buy some at the store, but it’s so much more rewarding to be able to create something personalised and specially tailored for the recipient.

For most of my birthday cards, I used birthday stickers as my embellishments. They give my cards personality without taking too much time.

I thought I’d share with you what is sure to be the first of many birthday cards I make this year. I hope you like it:

To create this card, I used white cardstock and scraps of paper I had left over from previous projects. The background is a simple blue patterned paper – great for setting the scene on a birthday card for a guy. I have inked the edges with blue ink to give it character and depth.

I then added two over-lapping vertical rectangles on the left side of the card to create a background for my embellishment and to create a contrast with the background paper. Again, I inked the edges to give them definition.

I then added my ‘Happy Birthday’ message. I did this before adding my embellishment so I could work out the best placement for all the different pieces and ensure that I had plenty of space for my sentiment.

To create the sentiment, I used a range of stickers. The large white alphabet stickers are from Doodlebug. The blue ‘H’ is a Creative Imaginations alphabet sticker matted with white cardstock. The ‘Birthday’ sticker came on a sheet of birthday stickers but you could easily replace this with small alphabet stickers.

Finally, I added my cupcake sticker to complete my design. You could use any birthday-themed sticker as your embellishment. Or you could use a sticker depicting something the recipient of the card really loves (like a sport, destination, hobby etc). It’s up to you!

Magic Of Christmas Scrapbooking Idea

With Christmas just two weeks away, I’ve really been getting into my Christmas crafts. As I mentioned last week, one thing I like to make at this time of year is Christmas scrapbooking layouts for the Christmas celebrations ahead.

Pre-making my Christmas layouts gives me the opportunity to immerse myself in this year’s festivities without having to have all my photos ready and waiting to be scrapped. And, in the new year, I can just print out my pictures and stick them straight onto my pre-made pages. I can have my Christmas memories scrapped before the back to school season even starts!

Of course, I have a million things going all at once at this time of year (tomorrow I’m testing a new recipe that I want to make for Christmas) so quick layouts are essential. Subsequently, for today’s page, I once again turned to my collection of 500 Scrapbooking Sketches. It’s the best way I’ve found for creating pages quickly and easily while still being able to infuse my creations with my own personal style.

I created this layout in under an hour using Sketch #50 from my collection of 500 Scrapbooking Sketches.

Materials Used: Green Bazzill cardstock, Sweetwater scrapbooking papers, cream cardstock, Bo Bunny Christmas stickers, green alphabet stickers and brown ink.

I made this page to showcase one special 4×6 photo. I followed the sketch exactly. It was a super-easy page to make, but I love how it turned out, especially with the stripes. Stripes are extremely versatile. As you can see, in this page, I used horizontal stripes at the side of my page. I then used the same striped paper to create my vertical stripe accent next to my photo. So simple!

My title was very simple too. I used two stickers by Bo Bunny – one that reads ‘Magic’ and another that reads ‘Christmas’. I then joined them with two little alphabet stickers that read ‘of’ to give me my title, ‘Magic Of Christmas’. You could easily create something similar with any phrase or word stickers you have lying around…or create you own title with alphabet stickers, rub-ons, cut-outs or stamps.

And, of course, since it’s a sketch, you just need to change the colours, patterns and words to create an entirely new page. In fact, I’m thinking of creating another layout just like it, but upside down.

Try playing around with the design and see what you can create. The possibilities are endless. And, this is only from one sketch! There are another 499 sketches in my collection!

Quick Christmas Scrapbooking Idea

The Christmas season is well and truly upon us. It’s a great time to organise some Christmas craft activities with your kids and your crafty friends. Personally, I love to use this time of year to make Christmas cards, catch up on any of the Christmas scrapbook pages I didn’t get around to making last year and pre-make some pages for this year’s photos. It’s the perfect way to remember last year’s special moments and get into the Christmas spirit for the festivities ahead.

It is a very busy time of year though. There’s always something happening and it isn’t always easy to squeeze in some craft time. As a result, I look for quick Christmas scrapbooking ideas that I can whip up in less than an hour. For this, I always turn to my collection of 500 Scrapbooking Sketches. They always help me get started (I don’t have time to procrastinate!) and, because they give me a plan to follow, I don’t have to waste time agonising over what to do.

I created this layout in under an hour using Sketch #318 from my collection of 500 Scrapbooking Sketches.

Materials Used: Cream cardstock, Magenta scrapbooking papers, Patchwork scrapbooking papers, Provo Craft Christmas sticker and Paper Pizzazz Tag Alphabet.

This is one of the pages I have pre-made for this year’s photos. I have made it to feature two 4×6 photos. The original sketch also had space in the bottom right corner for a smaller photo, but I decided to replace it with a sweet Christmas poinsettia sticker from Provo Craft. I thought it made a nice embellishment that complemented my colour scheme.

The sketch was very easy to follow. There aren’t many elements but they combine beautifully for a well-balanced page. And the best thing is, I can re-use the design as much as I like. If I change the colour scheme and the patterns, I will have a completely fresh design.

I also found that I saved a lot of time with this page by using two papers from the same paper collection. Scrapbooking manufacturers often release a collection of three, four or even more papers that all co-ordinate and can be mixed and matched with each other. By using papers designed to go together, you don’t have to take additional time going through your own stash trying to figure out which papers work with which – it’s already been done for you. It makes things so much easier and quicker!

I hope you like this design and will adapt it to your own Christmas scrapbooking projects. I’d love to see what you come up with!

Rilakkuma Card Making Ideas

Last week I introduced you to the adorable Japanese bear, Rilakkuma, so today I thought I would share a cute card I made using some of our new Rilakkuma stickers. I hope you like it!

Rilakumma is known as a relaxed, somewhat lazy, bear. The name Rilakkuma is actually a combination of the Japanese word for relax and the Japanese word for bear. He is often seen lying around and enjoying some time off. I thought I might try to follow on with this theme in my card design:

Materials Used: Brown cardstock (two shades), scraps of scrapbooking papers, brown ink, a brown pen and San-X Shiny Rilakkuma Fruit Kawaii stickers.

I choose a sticker of Rilakkuma leaning back against an apple as my centrepiece. I placed it in the centre of a pink circle which I then matted on a brown flower-shaped cut-out. To further highlight my centrepiece, I inked the edges of both the circle and flower with brown ink and drew a dashed border with a brown pen.

I then created a colourful background using pieces of scrapbooking papers left over from other projects.

First, I covered the top half of my card with a leaf-patterned paper and covered the join between it and the brown cardstock background with a strip of dark brown paper. I then placed a row of four strips of patterned papers on the left side of my card to create a backdrop for my Rilakkuma centrepiece.

Finally, I added a row of mini Rilakkuma and fruit stickers across the bottom of my card. If you wish, you could also add a sentiment like ‘Happy Birthday’ in the bottom right corner, just above the stickers.
